There are so many things to consider with lettuce, even though it is a rather simple project to grow.
Lettuce will grow on almost anything The full dosage of nutrients often browns and crisps up leaves, I find.
Not all lettuces are cut and come again varieties and will not grow back like the original leaves and must be harvested from the base, I find. If harvest is prolonged, the leaves will be inedible.
Most loose lettuces are ready to harvest at 4 weeks and will grow back. I like to base harvest and let them all grow back.

Cassy, I would definitely pick the outer leaves... and eat them! Your lettuce will thank you for the breathing space.

I trim at the base if I’m harvesting the outer leaves only. The rest of the plant remains in a can keep growing. But if you’re giving it a full haircut, you need to not cut from the base because the plant won’t be able to generate new leaves.
(Edit - this was in response to clumsythumbs’ question to Mike on page 1. I thought I hit quote but must’ve only hit reply.)
