I am about a week, give or take, into my first AergoGarden-ing. So far, things seem to be doing very well!
Garden 1 [AG 'Ultra']:
I started the standard 'Herb kit' that comes with the gardens last Saturday (Jan 12th) night in my Ultra. As expected, both the basils, were the first to sprout. I could see little white 'specks' of them sproutlings poking their heads by the end of Day 2 (1/14). Somewhat of a surprise, the Thyme also was not far behind; by Thursday morning, I could already see three sprouts! As of now, I the two Basils, the Thyme, and the Chives are all active. The Thyme and both Bails are above the label opening and looking pretty. The chives just suddenly popped up, or rather I just noticed it last night before bed. I had thought some point earlier in the week I saw something with the Dill and maybe Mint, but as of today I don't see anything coming up but there is a good amount of moisture under the domes, so that feels....right? I know it says 8+ days to germinate, and this is the 7th/8th day. The curly parsley is the only one I am concerned about. The grow domes never seem to get a tight seal on the pod (when I walk by the 'breeze' created will blow it off). When I planting the garden(s), getting the domes on one was actually the hardest part! Most of them I really had to twist and push to even get them on. Am I weird or have others had the same struggle? It seems par for the course the 'easiest' part is the hardest for me.
Garden 2 [Bounty Elite]:
I got my Bounty in the mail last Tuesday (1/15) and planted it that night. So...I had ordered both AGs from two different deals (the Woot and Sur la Table deals, respectively) on 1/8. I had known I wanted to do lettuces and/or greens, as this is the thing I buy the most in the store, and did not want two gardens of herbs (the herbs I use most in cooking are cilantro, basil, and parsley). On 1/9 I had ordered a custom lettuce kit from the AG site, trying to take advantage of the holiday sales. When I got the Bounty in the mail I had still not gotten any word from AG about the order being processed, shipped, etc. So, once I dealt with getting my package from UPS, and my impatience and excitement, I got the 6-pod heirloom lettuce kit that I saw on sale at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. As luck would have it, of course, that 'night' at 3:30 am I see that my stuff from AG had shipped Monday already and would arrive via FedEx Thursday or Friday. So...my petulance saved me a few days of growing but cost me a smidge of self-respect and an additional $10 that I did not really 'have' to spend. Oh well...from what I read lettuce is quick and short-lived, so I am set for several cycles to come.
Anyhow....I planted 6 of the lettuce pods Tuesday night and Wednesday by the time I got home, several had already sprouted. As of today, all 6 original pods are growing and mostly above the lid opening. This is not surprising, given what I have read, but it is always a huge comfort and excitement when things work as good or better than expected!
On Friday when my AG package arrived, I put in 3 additional pods, the Kale mix and Chinese Cabbage (x2). So far, it is hard to tell if there is any activity back there (they are in the back). Between the brightness of the lights, my big head, and the glare of the grow domes, it is really hard to see anything until it is a few millimeters above the growth medium. The Chinese cabbage say 1-7 days and the Kale I think say 2-7 or so I didn't expect anything to be really going yet (its only been like 36 hours since they got put in, and they only have a few hours of one light cycle).
As many note their first time, it really is amazing how much they grow overnight or between morning when I am making my coffee and night when I doing dishes. For example, several of the lettuces (Marvel of 4 seasons and Rouge d'Hiver) went from being brown specks (shedding their seeds?) to being sprouts between Thursday morning and night. By Friday morning all the original 6 lettuces had more or less sprouted and were visible.
Other than the grow domes not wanting to give me a tight fit, the only other thing that I am mildly confused/amused about is the way the two machines count days(?). I am not sure if it is because I planted both at night, but the Ultra that I planted ~11 pm last Saturday (1/12) night currently says 7 days. I guess I had been expecting it start on "Day 1" not Day 0. However, the Bounty that I planted on Tuesday night (again around 11pm) is currently on Day 5, despite being planted 3 days later. I am not sure if this was something they 'changed' or 'corrected' between the Ultra (which I know is quite a bit older model than the Bounty) and the Bounty? In any case, it triggers the type-A/obsessive compulsive parts of my brain that wants to consistency and perfection.
Once I take off the grow domes and can getter better pictures and once I have time to read the thread on how to use a repository and post photos on here, I will try to post some photo updates.
As a p.s.-- a few mornings when I my alarm has gone off at the same time the AG lights come on (6 am) it has nice that the lights have clicked on as I stumble to the kitchen and ask Alexa to turn on the coffee. Feels like a 'good morning' from them.
Ok, that is all. Sorry for this long, rambling post. Both gardens are up and running, YAY!
