Once I can get chard to germinate, it grows beautifully. But it is a challenge to germinate. Any suggestions?

hi Happy A few months ago I began a chard project and the seeds all germinated very quickly. One seed per pod and several shoots coming from the 1 seed. I had to end it because the machine hood quit on me. Anyway..I wonder if it could be the seeds you used in the past? The seed that I found were Bright Lights from Burpee. I just started some of these in peat pods for outside as well. Sorry I don't have AG project photos, but the project had to be nixed.

Thanks, Corinne. You're right that it might be the seeds. But I really, really like JohnnySeeds' compact variety called "Barese" as fits so nicely in AGs.
Maybe I'll try Bright Lights again. They sure are pretty.

Hi! I'm especially interested in learning about diy with your own seeds and seed pods!

Attachment Deletedi Happy, your chard pics make it clear that you are secretly "The Chard Whisperer." I'd like to learn. Also, if you'd like to try Burpee below, they are germinating well. My newest project: Swiss Chard -Neon Lights Blend -planted Mar 28th -used Burpee (see above), 3 seed clusters per pod (one per would have sufficed as every one of them germinated!) Am I supposed to let more than one stalk/plant grow per pod? What do you recommend? I went halfway: I pinched off at least one stalk per pod. Some now have two stalks/plants, some one. Your pics show multiple plants in some in front. Also, do you find your chard likes to be in a cooler place, like lettuce? Thanks!

Thank you, urbandemeter. Your chard is looking good!
I'd stick with the 2 pods per sponge, but I like harvesting/terminating earlier than most people do.
I'm not sure, but I think that chard is more heat-tolerant than lettuce. Enjoy your chard!
