All, I need help. I've had horrible respiratory reactions the past weeks to something in an AG and to fumes from under kitchen sink and in kitchen drain (which is where I dump the AG water).
What do you clean your drains with? (vinegar? bleach? ammonia? other?)
What do you clean your AG bowl with?
When we dump the AG water, it has the nutrients which have ammonia, so some ammonia liquid is going down the drain.
I made the mistake of cleaning the AG bowl with vinegar water. So I dumped water with ammonia/nutrients, cleaned with vinegar/water (followed the nutrients down the drain), then put ammonia/nutrients back into AG bowl.
I'd also REALLY done a deep cleaning (not just vinegar baking soda cleaning) on the sink and used (oh lord) Ajax/has bleach.
I have felt very unwell, burning throat, sweaty, unwell. Going outdoors helped immensely. Was so bad building said to call fire dept. re fumes but they just tested for natural gas. Regular people are the way to solve this.
What are you all cleaning with? Please help... Thank you.

First and foremost, I would consult with a physician.
I have no idea on what to tell you as I have never heard of AG's omitting any odor or fumes. However I can tell you how I clean my drains and AG's/
Drains: They sell products to put in your drain although I have never used them. I have used bleach, vinegar/baking soda mix and Fu-sol (which is a degreaser). I think CLR also has something. Your local home improvement store may have something or can direct you as to what to use. I do not think it is wise to use ammonia. That can cause burning in the throat, worse them bleach.
AG's: Deep cleaning. I have used bleach, vinegar or my lysol disinfecting spray. I always run clean water a few times after as well. I have always dumped my AG water in the kitchen sink. Have you had the plumbing checked to make sure there is not a blockage or roots coming thru the pipes? Is the main air line pipe clear?
Good Luck in figuring out what is actually causing your problems?

Usually I use Dawn and The hottest water from the tap. plastic pods get Dawn and Boiling water.
Only this time did I used bleach because of the drastic mold infestation I had...but that was 1 out of how many projects after growing since 2009? Dawn or other dish soap and the hottest water you can find is usually sufficient if there is no infestation. No corona in the AG!!!!
I as well suggest you see the doctor..

I think I used bleach once and vinegar twice. I think I will use Dawn on my next cleanings

While I'm unsure if this would work for all models, here's what I do for the Harvest: 1. Drain the leftover nutrient solution, either into a sink or a toilet. 2. Separate everything (including the two pieces/layers of the deck) and remove/disassemble the pump. 3. Wash everything with soap & water, mostly to remove any sediment. 4. Place the bowl, each half of the deck, and the water access cover into my dishwasher. (in other words, everything except the pump and whatever the piece that says "Fill To Here" is called) 5. Start the dishwasher whenever it's convenient. 6. Wash the pump (or pump pieces) and "Fill To Here" piece again with soap and water. 7. Let everything air dry. 8. Reassemble and start more plants!

Please help... Thank you. I would echo other folks here and say perhaps consult your PCP-- it sounds like you may have an allergy or sensitivity to something in your home. I have ALWAYS been very sensitive to OTC cleaning products. The chemicals in a lot of basic multipurpose cleaning products (like 409, Lysol, etc.) to create the scents give me migraines. Over the last few years I have grown very sensitive to bleach (scratch throats, lymph nodes gets a little tender). So, I RARELY use harsh chemicals in the home. To clean my kitchen sink I use bon ami and more natural kitchen cleaners (7th generation, Myer's etc.) and sometime just use a mix of vinegar and rosemary and mint essential oils with water. I do not eat meat so am fortunate to not have to worry about killing the bacteria and parasites that comes with that. That being said, I DO use bleach (or vinegar) when disinfecting the AGs between gardens and have never had an issue. I follow the disinfecting regime they suggest (1/4 C bleach and water run for 5 min; dump water for 5 min; dump and let sit for 2 days). This last cycle, there was no bleach at the stores due to the pandemic so used the vinegar method. Seemed to work well. I have never had mold or algae in any of my gardens (other than a little bit of the stuff that will grow on the sponges). I am not sure any of this helps any, but I would look into it with your physician and perhaps look into alternative cleaners... or maybe ventilate in the area you are cleaning, etc.

... 2. Separate everything (including the two pieces/layers of the deck) and remove/disassemble the pump. ... Thank you, Error. Can anybody direct me to a video that shows how to separate the layers of the deck?
And get them back together? (I'm using the now-discontinued Ultra units.)

Hi urbandemeter! I hope you're doing ok. Were you able to talk to a doctor?
It sounds like you've used a lot of cleaning solutions in one area in quick succession. I've had jobs where I've had to do a lot of cleaning, so I know that alone can cause respiratory issues. Mixing bleach with ammonia is incredibly dangerous. Bleach and vinegar is also dangerous. You can find more information here. If you haven't already talked to a doctor, I'd highly recommend it. Even a tele-health appointment could be helpful!
Hope you're doing OK!
