They grow forever. I have some still being cut and used from my Harvest Slim which will end when I start Tiny Tim, Rick.

This AG's Cherry Tomato Plant on day 71 is still looking pretty good. There are little yellow flowers about. Tomatoes pretty soon. :-)
I'm afraid the Sweety Toms just aren't making it. I'll start something else in its place. (That's the Sweety in the background. It's wilting and turning brown.)
Now, these scallions are booming!

Two scallions per pod! I'd take a thriving scallion over a sulky tomato!

and the star of the show... added nutes on this day 78 and water. Hmmm, I must have forgotten yesterday. It was waaaay low on water. Flowers are growing everywhere.
and the second attraction...
Onions in a Harvest. They are growing out from under the light. They are tall. I want to try something. I'm going to harvest these scallions right at the AG label to see if they will regrow again. I'll trim up the roots as well. There is a little bit of white showing for flavor. Wonder if I can extend that.
I'm going to let these three green onions grow outside the light for a while. The light is still covering a good 90% or better of the plant so we'll see. Best way to learn is to experiment, I always say.

I think they will regrow, Rick. And onions don't need terribly bright light, so they may be fine if they grow out a little. I grow chives in the spill over light from my Bounty.

I think you are supposed to leave a bit of green at the base, not cut into the yellow/light green of the stalk. You will find that you have to raise the light more than you want to because they zoom to the hood during the night.

This is about 15 mins long. Watch it if you want to grow green onions. It's an experiment in how short you can cut them and still have them regrow again. Very interesting.

That was fascinating, Rick! Thanks!

Great advice for soil growing, but for the AG baskets I can see the point where leaving enough to stick out of the sponge for light and yet deep enough for the roots to reach water could be advantageous.
hey..if it works, run with it.

He obviously knows nothing about hydroponics. These onions can and do survive in nothing but water. Anyway, my mother told me that the scallion was a weed. I never checked into it but I do know they grow everywhere. Just like weeds do.
ENJOY!

I can't be that harsh as to say he knows nothing about hydro,Rick ..In visiting his site,I see that he is an experienced Canadian small farmer who, evidently, because of his knowledge has earned over 100 thousand subscribers to his channel. No doubt he knows something about the many avenues and styles of growing. Basic fact 101.... Plants need nutrients for replenishment. Even weeds do. If just left in the water , even with water changes, they eventually run out of their stored nutrients and will not produce green shoots after several harvests..it is either a nutrient to sustain its life, or put it in soil. Nothing but water for a long time is a starvation diet.

Despite his ignorance, my onions are growing just fine in water and I'll keep them there indefinitely and as you can see they are doing fine. On day 85 the AG tom plant doesn't like as much pruning as I've been giving it but I know it'll survive. It does have flowers throughout.
See ya next week. :-)

But the onions are being fed, yes?

Hi, Rick. As Shawn asked, do you have nutrients in the Harvest with the onion and the tomato, or are you talking about other onions you are growing, too?
And knowing your magic touch with tomatoes, I know it will work hard at recovering for you!
