I can confirm that these methods work very well - once you trim the roots back, you can also lightly spray/soak the roots in 3% hydrogen peroxide for a few minutes, and that will go a long way towards killing off any bacteria that may be remaining on the roots.

I also have had success with 3% hydrogen peroxide, but I dilute it 1/3 peroxide to 2/3 water. I have damaged plants using it straight.
