I am thinking about getting one of these beautiful 6-8" carnivorous plants to grow in or near a Harvest to trap flying bugs that sometimes follow us indoors.
Even if they don't catch many bugs, they are very pretty!

I have been thinking about doing this! I have a few little gnats that get in from the garden. I'm pretty good about hunting them down, but I've thought that a carnivorous plant in my Aerogarden room would be a good idea! If you did this, perhaps I would join you! But I wonder if they like to share space? Maybe I should get a sprout and put them in that? What are you thinking?

Carnivorous plants are very, very different than normal plants since they will die very easily if given nutrients. They normally get all of their nutrition from insects. I've been thinking about getting some as well, although I would keep it in some type of soil. I still want to try growing some (from seed) hydroponically, but that would be a very long term project

Hmm! I could put them in just the water in a Sprout and feed them gnats?

Hmm! I could put them in just the water in a Sprout and feed them gnats? That's what I plan to try, but I'm not sure how well it will work. Here is a thread from someone who has grown pitcher plants hydroponically, and here is a very short entry in the Carnivorous Plant FAQ about it.

Distilled water is recommended for the seeds I ordered. They said the minerals in regular water would kill them.
That may vary on the type of carnivorous plant. (?)

A lot to think about! I think I might like to go with a Venus Fly Trap if I do a carnivorous plant. Can't beat the classics!

I do not bring any soil plants into my house so this may not work out for me.

I was looking into this some more, and I found someone that was growing venus fly traps in their AeroGarden! "We do no liquid nutrients! Strictly dried blood worms (fish food aisle) during the winter!" Here is the thread I found if you want to see more info or ask them something: Hydroponically grown VFT (little experiment)!

Those are scary, creepy and downright too UGLY for one of my nice AG machines, crusty though they are..I'll take a Vinca or a Geranium any day! Guess I am not daring enough.

I ordered some orange sundew seeds from somewhere overseas, and I guess they were victims to the covid slowdown. I'm not sure I'll ever see them. Maybe just as well after seeing that video!

Hey now, don't forget that you'll have to hand feed these guys meat on a regular basis... unless your home is abundant with bugs/animals that is. I know cuz I once owned a flytrap many many years ago. They keep growing and growing as you continue to feed them. I wasn't aware that raw meat was a food source, hamburger, pork etc., and I feed my flytrap with live 'meat'. (Flys, bugs, worms, spiders, etc., etc.)
Have fun!

And one day after lots of feeding over a period of time....The cat goes missing!
