I am thinking I want to grow Romaine and I plan to harvest each plant three times to keep them fresh and tasty. Based on that, I am hoping to do it cheaper than buying the Aerogarden brand pods. I can reuse the plastic baskets. I see there are compatible sponges, but what is the best type/buy? Also, any recommendations for Romaine seeds?

I'm a big fan of the Urban Leaf pods, but I've also used (untreated) rockwool cut down to size. Alternatively, if you get the 1.5in rockwool cubes, you can cut off the corners and get it to "fit" in an AeroGarden slot without needing the pod at all, but personally I don't like or recommend doing that. I don't have many recommendations for lettuce - I grew Tennis Ball Lettuce before, and while it was a bit on the bitter side, I think that may have been my fault for giving it too many nutrients. I plan to try some more in the future.

I like Parris Island romaine. Jericho is also good, but grows much more slowly. Those are the only two romaines I have grown.
I have Parris Island growing now, and am happy enough with it that I am not looking for another variety to try.
I tried buttercrunch, but it was not nearly as crisp as romaine, so I will not grow it again. And, unlike most people here, I have not enjoyed the tender, limp texture of most leaf lettuces. Most people here love it, though, and they are amazingly fast growers!

I like Jericho, Little Gems, Sweetie Babies and Dragoon as far as Romaine goes.
As for pods, I but them from Park's. I get their 60-Cell Bio-Sponge (120 count) for $19.95. There is also the Urban Leaf (50 count for $17.95) ones on Amazon.

I placed an order with Parks for sponges, Romaine seeds, and some Buttercrunch too. Seeds are so cheap, I think it is worth trying them. Thanks.
