But I probably will continue to grumble about the cost of sponges! Have you played around with "medium-less" growing? I've done it a few times and it's tricky, but the idea is that you grow the seedling in coco coir (or another loose medium of your choice) until it has some roots/leaves, and then move it to a hydroponic setup where it can be suspended by the leaves, hence no need for a medium. It's definitely popular with the Kratky method, but I've also seen it done with the AeroGarden where they use a bit of foam (or similar) above the hole to hold the seedling in place.

Yes, in fact, with the grow tower I plan to do that and secure the plants with reusable cloning collars. I have also used it in Kratky, but do prefer some type of growing media there, simply because the top roots are whiter and prettier.
I already have perpetual spinach seeds started in a mixture of coco coir and perlite. And, for seed starting, I can reuse the coco coir/perlite mix a few times. i do spray it with a mild peroxide solution between plantings.
