Newbie needing some help. Have Basil growing well but several stems coming up from each pod. In many of the posted forum photos, it appears people may have pruned to keep only only stem per pod. Am I seeing that correctly and if so, any suggestions on when and how to do this? Thanks in advance Aerohive mind!
Yes you are reading that correctly. Basil stems tend to get thinker and should really be thinned to one plant per pod. When they are up above the label and almost 2" is when I keep the best looking one and thin the others out carefully. You can do this by carefully snipping the seedlings you do not want off at the sponge.
I know in many AG Guides it states you do not have to thin Basil but in all the years I have been growing Basil I left two stems in twice and always needed to take one out as these do get full and thick. Check out the Member Gardens to see how they all grow their basil too.
