Today I set up some of my jars for planting...no seeds yet.
The Blue and Pink are transparent glass and I wrapped them in Florist Foil to block the light from Algae forming.
I am awaiting some more 3D lids and so the ones you see are going to be planted with lettuce tomorrow.
The ones planted when the lids arrive will be planted with Pak Choi and Tatsoi.
These are growing on a 2 tier stand. Each shelf has four T5 fluorescent tubes. I will be using the top shelf only when all are under the hood.

I have hesitated using mason jars because my panda plastic looks sloppy, and I didn't want to use plain aluminum foil.
Trust you to come up with the solution!

Looks like a great setup! Cannot wait to see the results. Very clever using the florist foil. I know you had previously posted an etsy vendor you got those jar inserts from and some folks were having trouble getting them. I randomly found this other vendor: link for quite a bit less, I think. I cannot vouch for them, but did see it and thought some people might be interested. At this price, I may order some! My mason jars are usually always occupied holding my dried goods and homemade broth, but I might be able to free up some at some point.

Thanks. It is good to know about other vendors. but they are a bit more ..only advantage is that one can buy singly rather than a 6pack. One also has to pay for shipping whereas Urban Hydroculture offers free shipping.(I am always on the lookout for free shipping or to see if the "free"shipping cost has been hidden in the item price...ebay vendors do that a lot)
There is a great deal on your referred site which I have my eye on...a starter kit for a fantastic price...thanks for linking the site!
I take it back!!!! One thinks they are getting the jars as well to make a complete kit...More than half way down the explanation it says the jars are not included... Goes to show that one has to really read the description and not go by the photo!!!
Anyone else seeing the photo w/o reading or carefully counting the pieces in the photo think the 'kit' included the jars?

Oh gosh!! Yeah it does make it seem like you are getting the jars. Even the description mentions it... Yes, always good to read fully!

The projects are growing, but I do prefer my salad boxes over the jars and will be planting the boxes next year. The jar projects have small sponges and limited room for roots whereas the salad boxes have net cups with huge Park sponges ..plenty of room. It is just very heavy to handle with all the water. But here are the jars with a variety of chard, lettuce varieties, choi and parsley. Hopefully they will plump up as time goes on.
After harvesting, I think I will be planting all jars with salad bowl lettuce and Pak Choi.

OH WOW! The taste of this variety of greens is to die for! This is my first time ever tasting this, but eaten raw it is crunchy, SWEET and w/o that greens taste! Tatsoi, also called Tat choi is related to Pak(Boc/Bok) choi yet w/o the tang. It is actually SWEET! I highly recommend. It is supposed to be a prolific cut n come again plant. I will be growing a lot of this in my AG's when I harvest the Pak Choi crops seen in another thread: Here are more of my greens/salad mason jar projects

I LOVE tatsoi! It is much sweeter and milder than bok choy.
I grew it outside last year and two plants fill and overflow an Earthbox. They can get HUGE! They are much better behaved indoors.
Yours is perfect salad size!

@cornne and Sher - can you recommend tatsoi seeds & source, please? It sounds like something we would really enjoy. Thanks in advance for any input & direction!

I got mine from Everwilde Farms last year.
If you google tatsoi seeds, you should find several vendors. I have bought them before, but don't remember the other vendor's name. They were good, too.

also Burpee has them as well as Kitazawa. They are all over the internet...even on Ebay for about .99 + .99 for shipping.

I am adding my King Arthur Pepper to my Winter Mason Jar thread because it outgrew the Harvest machine! What was I thinking.!? Although the plant is 'dwarf' for a bell pepper plant, I really should have paid more attention to the hint word "KING" in the name LOL! It has reached max height in the Harvest at least 3 times and I have cut it down, only to have it produce more flowers and grow back up to the hood!
Well, this may be its demise, but I clipped off the roots and stuck it in a Mason Jar.Light is being borrowed from another machine.
Here you can see some of the lovely bell peppers it is putting out.
as well as all the pollen falling from the flowers above
I really like this pepper for size and am definitely going to plant a few of these plants outside in the summer. Thanks to Shawn for gifting me the seeds several months ago.

I hope your King Arthur adapts to the jar and makes a strong comeback!
I am ready to grow some larger peppers, too.

That is a shame. But at least you know you can grow inside or out whenever you want to and that you enjoy the taste of them.
