I've had Outredgeous red romaine go bitter on me after having it as cut-and-come again for a few months - both in the AG and in containers outside. It didn't have a flower stalk, but the base was pretty big after everything I'd harvested from it.

dee2 see picture below. This is my Red Sails in the 72-day-old lettuce garden in one of my Farm24+ units. I hope this explains helps to understand my earlier questions. That's Marvel of the Four Seasons trying to sneak into the picture on the left. NOTE: I harvest leaves regularly, but from the bottom mostly, so the top stays looking pretty. LOL. What kind of water are you using? Tap, distilled, something else? Do you have a fan running? I have a fan in the room, specifically for the lettuce, but I'm sure everyone else benefits too. What's the temperature of the room? Just curious. mike, I want to try Jericho, it is on my list of seeds to buy. I've got Butter Crunch in the new Lettuce garden, and looking forward to it. On the Black Seeded Simpson, we may need to talk. Later, I'll start a new thread for info on my water. Wow. That is really red and beautiful. The tips of my lettuce are red, but not this deep color. I use distilled water and I make sure that the water is not warm. I also use ice cubes to keep the water cool. And, the room where the garden is located is in my basement, which range around 75 degrees. I plan to plant more red sails, but I will use my own seeds. Also, I just ordered ionic.

I’m going to give it another try. I just cleaned out everything today for a new crop. I hope that I don’t have a repeat of the beautiful bitters.

Everyone is different on how they use and harvest lettuce. For me, I harvest three times then start new. It grows fast enough and never gets bitter on me.

campingcorgis where did you get your Red Sails seeds? I started my new lettuce garden. Once again, my Marvel of Four Seasons did not sprout. My Black Seeded Simpson and the rest are doing fine.

I got them from Park Seed - but they seem to be sold out right now. Not sure how long it might be until they are back, but it doesn't cost anything to ask to be notified. I know that's not the same as having the seeds. You could try your local garden and/or home/hardware stores. They might have Burpee or Ferry Morse...or maybe even some of the boutique seeds. PLEASE NOTE: I haven't grown the Red Sails seeds from Park Seed yet. The ones in my current gardens are all AG pre-seeded pods! Really! They do great! Although I may try growing some from the Park Seeds soon, as I'm ending some other things pretty soon.

I have bought several seeds from ferry morse. For me they are not that great. I have not had great germination with them. Hopefully you will have good luck.

I alo so have had some awful results with Ferry Morse flower seeds. I will not grow them again.
I hope you have better results with them.

While it looked pretty its color did not come close to the vibrant red color of your Red Sails. Hopefully I’ll get better at this hydro gardening as I learn.

Hopefully I’ll get better at this hydro gardening as I learn. You know, as I remember, it took a while before mine got really red. And with the red, and think it got to be a more crisp lettuce too. It didn't start out that way at all! It was gradual and then just splendid! LOL. I love that lettuce. Great in salads and on sandwiches too.

56 days in and many of my lettuces are bitter. I can see pencil thick stalks with slightly smaller leaves growing off of them. Too late to lower nutes because I just had a reminder yesterday. I had three pods not grow at all and Aerogarden replaced them for me. I guess I will have to use those pods after I take all these bolted ones out. I keep my house at 78 degrees part of the day when we need to conserve power, so maybe too hot for them. The lettuces were nice for a while.
