Hum.. the image that your barrel brings to mind is that of a movie.. you know, where the parts are disposed of.. Sounds like it is going to be very well drained with all that wood in there under the soil!

Sounds like it is going to be very well drained with all that wood in there under the soil! I drew inspiration for the logs from hugelkultur, so I'm hoping that it will act like a sponge and keep/drain water as needed! A friend of mine has done full-blown hugelkultur garden beds, complete with fruit trees, melons, and dozens of vegetables - and he has not watered it or added additional fertilizer over the past seven years. Just the rainfall and the water-holding logs are enough to water every single plant.

You forgot the kitchen sink (ha ha) Long ago, when I did a lot of flower gardening, I used computer printout paper beneath my mulch. It would disintegrate very quickly, but kept the mulch in place much longer. Instead of shredding them, a company gave me all their old computer printouts. I laid them out in stacks about 1/4 to 1/2 thick and within a few months, they were gone! The mulch covered the paper, so it wasn't obvious what was happening.

If it weren't for the slight lip on the barrel from how I cut it, I would definitely use paper or cardboard underneath the woodchips to keep things neater.

The second barrel is done as well! I've started on the third:

I will especially be interested in following the second one. I have read a lot about that method in the ground. Can't spell it so won't try.

I can't spell it either but I normally have something open that I can copy and paste from Here is what the first and second barrels (respectively) looked like once I finished adding wood.
