4/12 got the onions and shallots in the ground.. had so many had to plant them very close to each other. This should produce smaller onions which will store longer.. However, I will probably over feed them and they will get big anyway! Never planted them this close so we will see what happens. I also don't know where I will lay them all out to cure.. have 2x or more than normal.. this is why I don't like to plant 2 seeds for every plant.. I can never just toss the extra!  |

Everything is outside and planted except for the eggplant.. have to wait for the peas to be done, planted too many onions and ran out of room.. String Beans  Peppers  Peas  Other bed of peas  Tomato's "Moment" MicroDwarf from Heritage seeds.  Garden Perl Hanging basket type from Heritage Seeds  Sweet For Children (Plum) Heritage seeds  4 Early 4th of July Burpee and one (far end) Bernt Sma Sota Heritage seeds (Current Type)  It is kind of hard to believe these will be over 7' tall in a couple of months.. baring any disasters.. Eggplant waiting for a home  |

It is red plastic mulch, and is supposed to reflect a light wave that tomatoes like to make them grow bigger. I have no idea if that part works and once they get going they shade all the plastic anyway, but there are other advantages. It helps to heat up the soil first thing in the spring if you install it a week or so before transplanting, it keeps the weeds down, the soil moist, when tomato's fall they do not rot, and clean up at the end of the year is easier. It is just plastic and kind of requires drip irrigation under it, which I have. I also add opening to allow rain water in. I found that if you don't put somethin in the openings the dirt and what not just cause the plastic to stick together and the water no longer enters. I have a filter system that sits over the cats litter box to capture the litter dust so have lots of old filter material I can slide in the slit made in the plastic. I have been doing this for years and years with good results every year, so just keep doing the same thing!  I normally use it on the bed with peppers and eggplant when I have a full open bed for them. Thank you! I saw that red plastic mulch on Amazon and was wondering whether it works. I may need plastic replacement mulch for the two EarthBox planters, if the wild turkeys and my ill-tempered squirrel decide to start digging in the growing medium. The covers that come with the planters are very thin.  |

Got the uprights and first row of horizontal support installed for the tomatoes. Peas are coming fast and furious, have a bunch to shell, blanch and freeze. Still have peas from last year in the freezer! Onions have been hit by Thripes and I have sprayed them really well with Origanicde but not sure if it helps. We shall see as time goes on. String beans are climbing the string trellis but no flowers yet.. Dang I always seem to take the picture at the worse time of the day.. all washed out again.. Have to mow after dinner..   |

Thanks! It is just the normal stuff, nothing very out of the ordinary. String beans are new to me this year.. wife claims to not like them fresh or frozen, says they are too fuzzy, but will eat them out of a can, YUCK! I did growing them years ago, but like peas, once they start to come in, you have to check them every day, or you end up with big tough old beans .. fine today, too old tomorrow. She likes lima beans, but I did not find them in the big box stores this year. May order some so I can do a few in the pea bed once they are done in another couple weeks.
Today we also shelled, blanched, bagged and froze 3lbs of peas. 9, 5.5oz bags.. more to pick tomorrow..
The shelling really takes a while, she is very particular, the little nib that connects the pea to the pod has to be removed from every pea.. But they sure do taste good!
