Has anyone tried growing any variety of orchid in an AG? I know that orchids are usually grown under controlled greenhouse conditions. What are everyone's thoughts about this? Is it mpossible, or merely impractical, to attempt to grow an orchid in an AG? Our wheelchair transport driver this morning mentioned a gardener friend who grows orchids outdoors in a frame set up in her backyard. So naturally I decided it would be fun to try growing an orchid! However, I've never tried to keep an orchid plant alive, let alone attempted to grow one from seed.

The short answer is NO.
I've been growing orchids for years. Orchid seeds can take up to 9 months to germinate. They are almost always grown in a sterile laboratory environment. Professional orchid growers hybridize their plants and ship the seed pods off to a laboratory for germination.
Orchids grow very slowly. It can take years for you to even figure out if your orchid is thriving or dying! (I've killed many an orchid in my day).

How about growing an orchid in an AG from something that is already started, scarfguy? (I can take NO for an answer, but I love the challenging projects--both my own and everyone else's.) It's very cool that you are an orchid grower!

theoretically a mini orchid might work but you would only be able to grow like 1 at a time and like scarfguy said you would really struggle, not really worth it but i thought about it myself when i first got my AG.

I used to have over 100 different species. I'm down to just 4 plants now.
Like I said, I found myself caring for these slow-growing plants for years just to realize that they were just dying slowly.
You could try planting a seedling in a pod just for fun. I don't think you will be successful though. Orchids are "air" plants. The grow way up in the canopy of the jungle and get soaked with rain daily and then dry out very quickly. My guess is that in an aerogarden, you will just rot the roots.

You must have an eye for art. I wish you would post the link to your scarves so others could enjoy them, too.

Thanks, Sher.
I've been weaving scarves for about 35 years. It started out as a nice "low tech" hobby to escape from my "high tech" network engineer profession. It grew to be the passion of my life. I've been retired since 2004 and weave every day in a small well-lit room surrounded by orchids and, more recently, aerogardens.

We used to have a member that grew orchids. They were never in the AG.

I thought you all might like to see my latest bloomer. This is one of the longest inflorescense that I've ever grown. 16 flowers are open and there are 6 more buds. I think my orchids like the extra light from the AGs nearby!

I found this video on Orchid Repotting. I have never owned one so I can not vouch for this however, here is the video...

Yep! That's how I do it. I leave a bit more of the original potting bark on the roots, though.

I’ve recently had more success with growing orchids under the AG lights. I need to maintain regular watering because it dries out too quickly. I wrote a blog post about my newest flower bloom. This one took more than a year til I saw new flowers. youngh.kim/winter-orchid-blooms/

How do you get so many flowers on one spike? Absolutely amazing! Great work.

Magic Blotch Mimulous also mimic orchids and can be grown in the AG
