I decided to get some lettuce varieties not included in the Aerogarden lettuce kits.
Nothing I am familiar with, just attempted to choose leaf lettuce.
Seafresh Red Velvet Lolla Rosso Darky Jericho Crisp Mint Continuity
Probably a couple weeks before I start these. The packages list germination rates between 85 and 99%

It’ll be fun to watch how these varieties turn out, tompepper7!

I tried the Jericho in my last lettuce crop. It was very nice. I had it in an AG with romaine and parris island. It was slower to germinate and slower to grow but had a nice taste. Very similar to the AG romaine.

Planted the non AG lettuce noted above today (Harvest XL).

After one week 4 out of 6 of the lettuce in the Harvest XL are sprouting. The two that are not have white growth inside the pods.
Similar to Bounty with Bok Choy, Caribbean Red Habanero, and Thai Bird small. I have harvested from the Bok Choy and it is really good (but I only planted one to see how they grow), the Red Habanero is sprouting and the Thai Bird has not sprouted with white growth inside the pods.

The white growth is a type of fungus that grows on sprouts. Sometimes it harms the seedling and sometimes the seedling with grows through it with out any problems. 3% hydrogen peroxide usually helps. You can put 3-5ml (about a teaspoon) in the water OR, what I do, is just put a few drops on the sprouting seeds themselves with an eye dropper.

My first lettuce in the Harvest and Harvest XL are winding down. I removed any pods that were limp and not producing. The lettuce in the Harvest are now limited to the height they can grow while the lettuce in the Harvest XL can continue to grow taller. Maybe another week here.
The non-Aerogarden lettuce I have growing in another Harvest XL is doing well.
The 4 that are growing: Seafresh Lolla Rosso Darky Jericho Crisp Mnt
The 2 that didn't start: Continuity Red Velvet

The environment the Aerogarden is in? The water used? The seeds? The Aerogarden sponges?

Good question! Right now I have 4 peppers started in a harvest XL. 3 are fine, 1 has the white fungus. SO... I think you can eliminate the water, and the arogarden environment. That leaves the seeds and the sponges. I don't know

I don't know ...I am wondering if soaking the sponges in something like Star San (a no rinse sanitizer used in home brewing) would work to mitigate this issue... Thinking mostly of Grow Anything sponges.

Google " damping off in hydroponics"
soaking the sponges may help. soaking the seeds in 3% hydrogen peroxide may also help.
Most things I read seem to imply that its just a normal fungus growth in humid conditions. The spores are probably in the air all the time and just take advantage of the humidity and the food source (seeds). I don't think there is much you can do about it. I always wondered if the humidity domes are really necessary for germination. It seems to me they may create the humid environment that the fungus needs. ... Fungus happens!

The fungus spores are everywhere in the air, I think, just like the staphylococcus bacteria that causes food poisoning if you don’t refrigerate your food. I get the fungus, and seeds often grow right through it. However, treating it with hydrogen peroxide on a Q-Tip kills it.

So my first lettuce is officially done. I harvested a last batch of leaves and pulled the power cords out.
This was the Harvest and Harvest XL growing Aerogarden heirloom salad greens. I'll get them cleaned up sometime this week or weekend for some lettuce and/or bok choy.
I picked up one of the Aerogarden bamboo shelves. The height of the bottom and middle shelves only allows the Harvest XL light to reach 15 inches (not 18).
The Harvest XL newly planted with non Aerogarden lettuce is doing well and I should be able to try some soon. On a side note, I did correctly choose leaf lettuce at least for the for pods that sprouted. The Seafresh is doing really well.

I think I just ordered one of the light extenders for the Bounty.
The seller was set on "taking a break" for a while. The other day I noticed that setting was gone and I sent a message about the Bounty extender. The reply said one was available if I wanted it. I placed an order.
(edit) Got a confirmation so it's a go.

I did the same thing about a week ago. It hasn't shipped yet, so I suppose he got a lot of orders all at the same time and he's making them as fast as he can.

The non-Aerogarden lettuce was good. Nice tasty lettuce. A few weeks ago I was thinking the lettuce was not doing as well as the Aerogarden lettuce but, besides remembering I had done the Aerogarden lettuce in two Harvest models (instead of just one), some more leaves grew for a few more salads.
But this is also winding down.
