Hello. I recently started Aerogarden’s Thai peppers and when it sprouted it was a little skeptical because the leaves were really dark and the stem seemed thin. I waited for a bit and the second set of leaves were green but with purple veins. Is this normal? I looked at other posts of folks with chili and I’ve never seen one where the sprouts look purple/veiny like this. Thanks!

I have had that happen to me in the past and it resolved on its own. I still have no clue why it happened and I changed nothing. Hopefully someome can assist further but it ma y have to do with phosphorus or magnesium. I can also be totally off 🤷🏼♀️

Thank you everyone! From reading the article, I’m guessing it could be either the nutrients or the lights since I only had half a capful for the first two weeks and I’ll raise the lights. I’ll work on the nutrients first then see how it goes. Fingers crossed.

There is nothing wrong with your plant, chilliplant . I grew this pepper variety this past fall and winter. It naturally has darker leaves with the purple/red color mixed in with the green. As the plant grows, you see less purple pigmentation in the foliage but the leaves are a darker green than you see on some peppers. The foliage is gorgeous. The flowers are a pale purple and the fruits also start out a dark violet. They go through a beautiful color change to a reddish orange. The color progression is dark violet, creamy peach, pale yellow, brighter yellow, and on to a reddish orange.

I topped it off early and the foliage is growing pretty well, no flowers yet though. The leaves are indeed green now with minimal purple veins on it. I’m so excited now from your description! Do you know what variety this is? It definitely wasn’t the Thai pepper I had in mind. Could it be the Chinese 5 color? Are the peppers hot?

chilliplant The label on mine just said Red Fire Pepper and Aerogarden didn't provide a detailed description. I googled it and didn't find much info at all but someone mentioned on Reddit (I think) that the peppers started out purple. Otherwise I would have been surprised. I saw a photo of the various colors it goes through in ripening but it is even prettier in person. I described the ripe color as reddish orange but it really does get to a red stage. It just isn't the same deep red as a jalapeno or some other peppers. You will enjoy growing it. Lots of blooms and peppers and lush foliage. I had to trim the plant occasionally to keep it in check. Yes, the peppers are hot. Mine was growing in a Bounty so I used 12 ml of the AG nutrients, 4 ml of Bloom City CalMag, and 2 ml of KoolBloom. I started slow with the CalMag and KoolBloom and worked up to the amounts shown. That may not be the right way to do it but it worked ok for me. Have fun and happy pepper growing!

Thank you so much for the very detailed and descriptive response. I’m very excited! I was a little worried it would be the round shaped chili that Aerogarden also sells (purple hots). I’m glad that that is not the case. I’m also glad that it would be hot! I want to use them for fried rice and basically to have some zing for certain meals. I bought some Organic CalMag but it’s still unopened because I’m so worried I’ll mess up the measurements but I think I’ll follow what you did and start slow introducing it. Can’t be worse than nothing! 😊
