Hi serri - I don’t know how I missed your last couple of posts on this - I most definitely would have commented because I love this project. It’s interesting how the shortened roots made such a difference at that young age. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, and yet I am. Only because young plant life so often still thrives. But also they’re so vulnerable at the same time. Very interesting. Keep it up! (And here’s to hoping I see it! )

I think the reason the short roots failed is that the plants were being held by foam instead of a peat sponge. That means the AG pump didn't help them, the only water they could get was from the basin itself. So far, as long as they survive the transplant they seem to grow a bit slower initially, but after that, the results are identical to the lettuce in the AG sponges. Because they all got dumped into the aquaponics system, it really wasn't the greatest long-term test- both the sand sprouted and the AG plants bolted almost immediately.

I suspect it was a lack of both food and light that caused them to bolt. I wasn't terribly surprised the first batch in that system went bad.

I probably shouldn't add too much ice to my fish tank. The fish may not like it.

No worries. I still haven't gotten into the habit into putting ice cubes into my AGs, so I do have a bolting problem there as well, just not quite as fast as that fish tank did.
I've gotten the light hung lower and I'm going to start slowly replacing the lettuce to see if the new plants will do better.
