I have a patch of onions growing outside, the greens are getting quite tall, should I trim them down? Trying to figure out if this is a good thing to do to them or not. I heard they are good to eat also.

no need to trim them.. Onions need lots of water but they don't like to be in soggy soil.. ..you will see they fall over when they are in need of water.. they like it to be regular and then go away.. so if in not well drained soil, don't over water.. if in well drained soil water frequently.

Thank you for the advice all, I'll keep a close eye on what they are doing and water them as you said. Would it be bad to trim and eat some?

Trimming them will not hurt them.. but the leave are just like the leaves of any plant.. they are needed to make food.. If you greens that taste like onions, plant some perennial chives.. come up every year, spread and taste like mild onions.. great on twice baked potatoes and lot of other things.. Did you read how to cure onions.. this is very important if you want them to last a long time after they are harvested.. Just google it, there is lots of info out there.. The curing is the part I dislike about growning onions as I have little room to do it.. Curing carts help so you can move them around and put them inside when it is going to rain   After Curing  |
