Hi guys, I love them! I put them on most everything. I cook with them exclusively. I even pop 'em in my mouth when I'm cutting 'em up.
Can they be grown in an AG??? If so, has anyone tried it??? Are there any threads here about it???
Thanks, Rick

I am not sure where, but I am almost certain I have seen some threads about this. If you cannot find in this Fruit and Veg forum, maybe look through the General forum? I know I have read about a certain type of onions (bunching onions?) people have grown or tried. I know people have grown garlic scapes and green onions here...
I think the hard part with onions is they are a bulb, so hard to grown in the pod set up? I am sure others will chime in!

Lookie what I just found! Mini red onions!
I plan to try these out in the near future. Should grow fairly well in an AG I'd think. It'll be an interesting experiment anyway.
Comments are welcomed. What do you think?

where would the big onion grow? it is a bulb and would be down in the water. it could never fit in a plastic pod! Bunching onions ,like green onions can be re-grown after the tops are used.
Green onions do not do well I have found out, and never tried after that.. The AG is made for the plant roots to go down in water, so a bulb would have to sit on top of the hole and the roots grow down.
Chives are the closest thing I found to grow.
Serri588 has a thread on alla Walla Onions you could search on the forum.
But bulb projects from seed are not compatible with the AG...but that's not to say you couldn;t fool around and be the first!

That's exactly how I was going to try it. Can someone tell me if those grow sponges soak up water? I would need a way for the roots to be in water all the time. So, I would need an absorbent type sponge of some kind. I hope this makes sense.

Roots can go right into the water w/o a sponge. I did that for my transplanted spearment plants this week in the Slim and they have adapted well... (although they are not bulbs.
For already bulbed plants you can always cut a sponge and sandwich the roots in between the 2 halves in the basket, or plant it like you would a narcissus bulb and just let the bulb sit on top of the hole (or the empty basket). I grow bulbs this way for flowers and am guessing it could be done with what you have in mind. Experiment and see what happens!
FWIW

thing is..are you planning on eating the top of the bulbs that will grow out, or the bulb itself? If so, I really don;t think the bulb is going to grow unless it is in the ground!

I eat the whole onion so we'll see what happens. I'm curious to find out if green/red onions will grow in an AG. I may try to grow a small garden outside on my balcony with the west afternoon sun. Don't know yet.
