Different Types of Peppers. From Sweet to Hot!
This is not an entire list but I have complied some of the more known peppers along with their scoville heat units. At the bottom there is a link to a site that has an extensive list.
Bell Pepper | The Bell Pepper is also known as Green, Red and Sweet Pepper. It is relatively large in size, the bell-shaped pepper in its immature state is green with a slightly bitter flavor. As it matures, it turns bright red and becomes sweeter. You can also find yellow, orange, white, pink, and even purple varieties. With their high water content, bell peppers will add moisture to any dish. Scoville heat units: 0 | |
Banana Pepper | These peppers have a yellow hue to them and as they ripen they will turn orange and then to red. These are mild with a slight tangy flavor. Scoville heat units: 0–500 | |
Shishito | These are thin walled peppers that are hotter as they turn red. Scoville heat units: 50 to 200 | |
Sweet Italian Pepper | Also known as Pepperoncini, Friggitello and Tuscan Peppers. These have a light, sweet and tangy crunch. Scoville heat units: 100–500 | |
Cubanelle | Also known as Cuban or Italian Frying Pepper is similar to a bell pepper but sweeter with a tad of heat. Scoville heat units: 500-1000 | |
Anaheim | This long pepper is mild but when mature it is a deep red. At this point they are known as a Colorado or California Red Chile. Scoville heat unit: 500-2500 | |
Pablano | This heart shaped pepper is mildly spicy. When Mature it is dark redish brown, These can be dried which is then known as an Ancho Pepper. These have a sweetness of a raisin. Scoville heat unit: 1000-2000 | |
Mirasol | Bright Red pepper that points up while growing. When dried they are called Guajillo. They are fruity and acidic. Scoville heat unit: 2500-5000 | |
Jalapeno | Is widely known as a green medium sized pepper. However once ripened to red it will be hot yet sweeter in taste. When dried, it is called a Chipotle. Scoville heat unit: 3500-8000 | |
Serrano | With just a few inches of this tapered pepper it packs a punch. When ripe these can be red or orange in color. Scoville heat unit: 6000-23,000 | |
Kung Pao | Chile Pepper with an earthly and fiery kick. Scoville heat unit: 7000-12,000 | |
Cayenne | Slender and tapered this is very well known as being dried and ground. Scoville heat unit: 30,000-50,000 | |
Tabasco | This pepper is best known for sauces. It is only a 1" to 2" pepper that is bright red when ripe. Scoville heat unit: 30,000-60,000 | |
Rocoto | This is almost as hot as a habanero. While looking like a bell pepper and having sweet skin, the inside has heat. Scoville heat unit: 30,000-100-000 | |
Piri-Piri | These are also known as Birds Eye. While being a small pepper they have the heat with a punch. Scoville heat unit: 50,000-175,000 | |
Scotch Bonnet | These are very popular and often compared to a Habanero. These are not a mild pepper and do bring the heat. Scoville heat unit: 80,000-400,000 | |
Habanero | These are one of the hottest better known peppers that can be found in most if not all stores. They have a hint of sweetness while being hot under the skin. Scoville heat unit: 100,000-400,000 | |
Ghost | This pepper goes by several different name such as Bhut naga Jolokia amd Red Naga (Naga means Snake). This is said to be one of the hottest edible pepper in the world. Not as hot as the Carolina Reaper. Scoville heat unit: 1,000,000 and over | |
Komodo Dragon | This is often compared to the Ghost. It taste sweet before the heat kicks in. Scoville heat unit: 1,400,000 and over | |
Carolina Reaper | This is about as close as you can come to eating pepper spray (not that one would want to). Scoville heat unit: 1,000,000-2,000,000 | |
Dragons Breath | It is said to be the hottest pepper out there. However no testing has been officially done. They are one of the smallest peppers grown. Scoville heat unit: 2,480,000 (not an official unit) | |
