It is time to clean and set up my salad Boxes for the winter. In the winter I like to grow flowers in the AG machines, but use the Salad Boxes for lettuce and Choi.
Today I planted 16 pods of Salad Box Lettuce in both boxes and placed them in the Park Seed Grow sponges...the largest ones they sell.
These go into the baskets and submerged in a hydroponic mix. I do not use soil, but just the water and aerate by lifting the cover a wee bit every day. Every year I get TONS of lettuce using non AG hydro methods...even the simplest work..
The boxes get light from a rack with hoods with bulbs which I also use for seed starting in April and run on a timer....this was a real great gift several years back. One doesn;t need a Hydrofarm to grow lettuce..tupperware , a Folgers can or a mason jar is just as good...the problem is finding light for the project.
Last year I grew lettuce in a coffee mug! I just stuck some seeds in a few sponges, put them in a coffee mug with a few drops of nutrients and let the light from a Harvest AG shine on it. VOILA'!
Anyway here is the project just planted:
And the link from last year's Hydrofarm Lettuce/Choi Projects:

The biggest drawback is the lights. I only got them because I had the double tier grow rack just sitting until seed starting time for the yard and thought it would be a great use for it. I think I paid around $30 each.

Really good idea!! A question, if you don't mind: do you thin out multiple lettuce sprouts or leave them in the same growing sponge?

Right on schedule, the Salad Bowl is harvestable. I will have 2 pods along with the rest of the Choi and some AG toms this evening.

Yummy! I need to grow some more lettuce after Christmas. The Romaine you can not eat from stores and I do not want to get them from the pizza joint either (even tho they have great salads). So I need my own

Yikes! I think it is past time for some huge salads!
As I harvest the pods , I pull out the stems, clean up the residue roots and reuse the pod. These are the super sturdy Park seed Jumbo Bio Kit sponges and I find they are re-useable. I am dropping 1 Choi seed inside and, LQQK!
some are coming up and 4 weeks from planting theose pods will be ready to harvest.! Fun.
