After my unfortunate mix-up, I decided that I WILL have lettuce this time, no matter what. I started four pods outside of my Harvest, using my method to get seeds started without getting algae started. Each pod contains two Tennis Ball Lettuce seeds in an Urban Leaf coco coir replacement pod.

Three days later, we have the first sign of seedlings!

I'm probably going to put this one in soon! The leaves are almost out of the hole, and I can see the first roots coming through.

Okay! The two previously shown pods (with the strongest seedlings?) have been placed in one of my fancy new Sprouts. I'm not sure if I'll let the other two continue, or if I'll just remove the seedlings and sanitize the coco coir. Either way, I've decided to use my Harvests for bigger plants. Edit: The other two pods have been cleaned and sanitized. The lettuce seedlings in those were brown and starting to turn to mush, so I don't think they got enough light.

So far they're growing really well! Here's a picture from April 30th: I'll grab a more recent picture tomorrow. They had a growth spurt once I added more nutrients.

Ended this today: The lettuce was dying on the edges (most noticeable on the right of the image), especially near the center of the plant. It might have been an airflow issue? Either way, I had a nice large salad for dinner and I'm going to start something else in the Sprout. I think if I tried this again, I would use just the middle pod instead of trying to grow two.

That lettuce looks crunchy. Was it at all crunchy? How about the taste? Bitter? mild? I am thinking of trying it after I hear of the taste.
I dont know if it helps any for further growing, but I find that lettuce requires half the amount of nutes they recommend. I have burned more leaf edges from adding the suggested amount til I cut it in half. At times I just add 1 ml to a small machine and only 2 ml to a Bounty even.

I bet it was the nutrients then. I added one capful once the seedlings appeared (and reset the garden), and then I added a second capful once the plant food timer lit up. It didn't have any dead edges before the second capful... The lettuce is very tender, not crunchy at all. I've done a few Kratky grows of this lettuce, and it always looks crunchier than it ends up being, for better or for worse. It's a bit on the bitter side, but not too strong. I could imagine it pairing well with some finely diced radishes and a vinaigrette. If you want some seeds, I'd be happy to send some your way!

It definitely was the 2nd capfull in the Sprout. I will try them at a future date, but I have tons of my regular seeds to use up. Thanks, though , for your kind offer.
