After playing with Kratky and five thrift shop Aerogardens, I settled on using Aerogarden style pods for all my greens. (I can't grow much outside due to rabbits, wild turkeys, crows, and deer) The buckets are indeed kitty litter buckets. They are HDPE which is "food safe". I have some coffee containers too. They are also HDPE.
The light is three (Menard's) LED single strip shop lights joined by screwing them to a piece of PVC pipe. The stand happens to be an adjustable stand, but this height is never changed.
Each bucket lid has six holes. I purposely crowd the plants to maximize my greens. At two to four weeks I can start harvesting the outer, mature leaves. After a couple of weeks of that, I take out every other plant. A week or two later I again take out every other plant. After the last harvest I clean and disinfect the buckets with bleach, rinse, and plant again with starter sprouts grown in an Aerogarden Harvest. This unit produces more lettuce, basil, and spinach than my wife and I care to eat.
I grow greens or other things in two classic three hole gardens and two sprouts.
