Hi All, So as I mentioned in some of my previous garden patch threads, the new townhouse I moved into has a full basement (where laundry room etc is). It has all of these overhanging fluorescent units (not movable) for lighting. As I plant my AGs and see a lot of folks doing cool stuff in Krakty set ups, my mind has started to drift toward some of those possibilities. My question: If I have large chrome shelving units that I could theoretically place under some of these lights and make a Kratky set up I am thinking something like this: Kratky by Aaron Blasyak, on Flickr That I could make on my own (this is not mine, just a sample photo). 1. What kind of light would I need? Rather what wattage and kelvin spectrum? (Not sure if that makes sense). I would be buying some type of fluorescent to get in the existing units. Currently, it has a 32watt 4100k "cool white" light. So, was thinking if I replace with some CFL that can be used for growing plants. 2. How far away would I need to place the plant for lettuce/greens? For larger, flowering plants (tomato or peppers or cukes etc...) Since I cannot move the lights, was thinking I could move the shelves up and down in increments (I know this is not ideal and may be wonky, but figure why not use what I have?). For reference, here are some photos of what the light units look like: 2020-12-03_10-02-47 by Aaron Blasyak, on Flickr 2020-12-03_10-03-31 by Aaron Blasyak, on Flickr Maybe this would not work at all? Alternatively, I was thinking of some type of grow light I can attach to the top of the chrome unit and adjust the shelf height....but this would cost more $$$ to get going. Many of you are quite accomplished hydro / non-AG growers, so thought I would throw the question(s) out there. Thanks in advance.

I have a 2 tier grow stand which I use for seed starting in the spring as well as lettuce growing in the winter. It uses the T5 high spectrum bulb which would work just fine in what you are showing there.Lettuce doesn;t need much to grow. My Romaine Jar grows just fine borrowing light off a Bounty hood to the side!!!. I like to keep things simple! As for height, judge that by how you are growing lettuce in your AG..the hood level from your plants. The lights so high up in the basement is a problem because if the lettuce is more than 3-4 inches lower than the light, they will stretch up and grow leggy..not good.
Before I got my large floor stand, I had a Jump Start which is ideal for lettuce and would suit your needs perffectly. It fits right on the table and the light fixture can be lowered and raised. ANything can be placed under the T5 from Kratky to soil to deep water culture w/o bubblers.
They go for under $100. I used mine for quite a while! This is a Fantastic price!!!!
Another option would be to get one of those clamp on lamp shades at the hardware store and affix it to some kind of pole and buy a bulb for the project to shine down on the box.
I hope these suggestions help a wee bit.

Hi @cornne, those are VERY helpful! I had considered getting something like you show in idea #2, but then thought if I had the overhanging...would save me money so wanted to explore if I can make it work....
I was concerned about greens getting leggy. I was hoping if I put a container on top shelf, it would only be maybe 6" when seedlings... I had also thought growing first in AG and transplanting a tomato or pepper...
I will have to read up a bit more. I thinking am def gonna do some kratky between my AGs in mason jars or old protein powder containers....
