So, I have not done a whole lot of seed "starting" outside of planting in AGs. However, I have wanted to expand my Kratky set-up to have a container of herbs and greens under a grow bulb, so started some seeds last weekend (about 8 days ago). in Rockwool.
I planted:
2 of Bright lights Chard (which I have very mixed results getting to germinate in my AGs); 2 of Utah Celery 2 of Rosemary 2 of Cilantro (I have NEVER been able to get cilantro to germinate in AG). 2 of Bull's Blood Beets
The chard germinated in a few days and is now above the plastic dome of the container; the beets, cilantro, and celery have all germinated. The Rosemary looks like it is starting to open ( I know from reading here that it can be a very slow germinator).
I placed the rockwool in a medium take-out style container (black bottom with clear plastic top); soaked the rock wool and placed a little water in the bottom. I stuck it on top of the hood of one of my Harvests for heat, but still getting some indirect ambient light from taller machines. Every few days I rotated it to a different area in the grow area. I am really happy that they all grew so fast.
Of course now I have to figure out where they are gonna go and how. This is my first time using rockwool for anything. It is ugly but easy to work with and cheaper than the AG pods.

I use rockwool in my little grow tower. It really is easy and cheap.
It will be fun to see where they end up getting planted!

Yes, much cheaper and it being inert/nonorganic figured might be less susceptible to algae while it is young. My plan is/was to put 9 or 12 holes in a 10 gal tote and put a mix of greens and herbs. I am just sort of observing the footprint of the light before I commit.

Rockwool will grow algae when it is in nutrient water and is exposed to light. That's why people use clay pebbles. Besides supporting the plant, they block the light.
But you can block the light with anything. Maybe cut black plastic in circles with a hole in the middle for the plant sten (kind of like an AG label), then cut the circle open and slip the collar around the plant over the rockwool.

That is good advice, thanks! By algae I meant compared to the AG pods. For slow germinating seeds I often find the algae overwhelms the pod before the seedling can started, then dies off (sometimes). My plan was to trim the rockwool down some and then cover with clay pebbles once it was in the netpot/container. As of right now, they are just moist from the original water I added, no nutrients or anything.

clumsythumbs, I also have some Swiss chard seeds growing the same way -- in rockwool with just water. No algae worries at this point.
(I also have a new crop of Swiss chard growing in a Bounty -- as well as in the grow tent. We love it!)

Yes, my chard germinated in a matter of a few days whereas in my AG it takes a while. Was very happy!
