*update* My apologies, I misunderstood what I was seeing. They were using wine corks in unused seed pods to block sunlight.
Saw in a FB post someone using wine corks as a seed sponge in AG. Has anyone tried this?

I can't imagine baby roots being able to make their way through cork. I'd love to see a picture of it.

I have not seen this. But from seeing wine corks, I would think that while it may work they are to thick and firm for roots to grow thru properly.
Wine corks also mold easily. We do not want mold in our gardens. Also many corks now can be synthetic and these should not be used as they can not be used in compost either. If 100% cork then it is possible but again they can get moldy and I personally would not use. That is not to say they can not be.

I see doug updated the original post to say they used them as hole covers.
