One of my challenges at the start of my recent AG growing process is identifying when multiple seeds sprout at the same time vs “its supposed to be like that”. It took me a while to feel comfortable pulling things. I had over 6 lettuces growing in each pod for a while! I made a mistake though, thinking my marjoram was doing the same thing, and I inadvertently killed it. The purple leaf looks like a Basil, whereas the rest looks like lavender. Am I right? Here’s the pic. flic.kr/ps/3uYCUy

That looks like Purple Opal Basil or some type of mustard to me. It's definitely not lavender, but if you lightly rub the leaf and it smells like basil, then it is basil.
If you want to remove it, I would suggest cutting it as close to the base of the stem as you can. Trying to pull it out at this point would damage the roots of the lavender.

Seconding Error. Smelling it is a good way to be sure.

It does look like a purple basil but as others stated, gently rub the leaf and see if it smells like basil.

Thanks for tip of cutting vs pulling. I would rather let it grow. How do people do with that? I notice my lettuce grow much better without competition and I’d never think about doing that but lavender oil is smaller.

Some plants grow better by themselves and/or do not play well with others. Not that they cannot but for example, for the most part tomatoes and peppers like warmers water while herbs and lettuce love cold. Also different plants use different amounts of nutrients. I know AG recommends a certain amount for different machines. They are recommended amounts and are often amended depending on plant(s). So really it is up to the grower and what they want to do.

Hi,
That beautiful purple herb is dark opal basil. I grow it and love it.

Here is a pic of my purple basil in soil. I also recently grew some in the AeroGarden. If I can figure out how to get those pics to flicker I will share them. flic.kr/p/cx8bD3

I think that this shows the purple basil in my Bounty AeroGarden. I’m not quite sure how to post photos even after reading the instructions. So, I hope that I got it right. flic.kr/p/2kEvD5r

dee2, that is beautiful basil you have growing outdoors and in your Aerogarden. Love that deep, rich purple color.
How does it taste compared to the Genovese basil in your herb kit?
To insert a picture, when you are composing a post, there is a little icon showing a mountain, representing a photo, on the top menu bar.
Click that little picture and you should get a popup where you can paste your link.

Thank you. Purple Basil has a very strong taste, it is not as sweet as the Genovese, but is tasty. I do not use it in salads, I prefer to use in soups and to add more flavor to red meats.

Thanks, dee2. It almost sounds like it could replace bay leaves. Only better.

Your images are fine. Wow, that is beautiful! I am afraid it might become too big to share that space. It looks super healthy! Here is a pic of my purple basil in soil. Great tip re water temperature. I hadn’t even thought of it. I normally don’t add straight cold water, simply because it doesn’t feel good to me so I project that shock onto plants. Not scientific, I know. I don’t do warm water, either just coolish water. I will research this more on the forum. I tend to be more liberal with the plant food once they are growing strong, adding a capful or so during the off week. Some plants grow better by themselves and/or do not play well with others. Not that they cannot but for example, for the most part tomatoes and peppers like warmers water while herbs and lettuce love cold. Also different plants use different amounts of nutrients. The purple basil is a prolific grower and it will take over the garden if you let it. Prune often to tame it. And, don’t forget to trim its roots.
