Unfortunately my thriving lettuce is starting to mold on the top of the pod. I didn’t know the labels served the dual purpose and since my leaves were getting stuck on the labels, I took them off early on. I now know the labels protect the pods from this very thing but its too late. I can fix the ones that are clean but sadly the lettuce is too late. Bummer!

How long has your lettuce been growing? Have you tried to gently take a qtip dipped in peroxide to tap all the algae on top (without touching the plants)? Sometimes you can scrape it off and then tap the tops with peroxide. This helps. I have even cut a bit of the sponge to remove the algae without hitting the plants.
Also, have you read the thread on how to prevent such algae in the Nutrient and Supplement board? Take a look here

The lettuce has been growing close to 3 months. I just took off the tippy tops of the pod and rinsed them with distilled water. I did a little research today, I started doubting it was mold and more deposits from the water. It appears not to be mold. I saw no algae. I put labels on the pods. I don’t use nutes, didn’t even see any for sale. I imagine the regular plant food has nutes but that doesn’t seem to be what the thread is about. Thanks for the link. I definitely won’t be adding anything besides the food. It does just fine. I will try to use distilled water as much as I can or get a new filtration system. What about reverse osmosis? I don’t use that because its devoid of nutrients. I add some for my pets and I.. Concentrace. I don’t want to add anything to plant water though, just in case its harmful to them. I think some do use RO water. DO a search on this forum for the phrase "reverse osmosis" and you will come up with some threads/posts.

I had a small algae problem with my 6 pod harvest unit last month. I harvested my 3 largest herbs and left three herbs to continue growing. A couple of days after the harvest I started to see algae on the lid. I noticed that the algae was most prominent in the sponge holders and in the crevice that surrounds the lid top. I also noticed that the crevice let’s small amounts of water seep to the top. Side note, I covered the empty pod areas with AG lid covers after I removed the herbs and algae still grew.
There is No crevice on the lid of my My 9 pod. It is smooth and the lid is dark like the base. And, I have not had an algae problem with the 9 pod. At least, not yet. So, I’m thinking that the 6 pod lid may actually contribute to algae development and growth. I could be wrong on this.

I use RO water in all of my AeroGardens and other hydroponic containers and I haven't had any issues. If you use RO or distilled water though, you may want to pick up a calcium & magnesium supplement to add the trace minerals that unfiltered water normally has.

ERR0R1755Thanks for that. I got some for RO but didn’t realize distilled needed it to. I have been largely using distilled to minimize the RO since RO wastes a lit of water.
