Some of my herbs really don't seem to be doing well, and I'm not sure what to do at this point. I've tried changing the water, reducing nutrients and adjusting the height of the light, but they keep getting worse. It seems that the ones on the left (mint, chamomile and thyme) are doing okay, but my basil, cilantro and chives seem to be dying. Should I completely restart the garden? Can I keep the three on the left in a cup of water while I sanitize the Aerogarden again, so I don't lose them? Also, what is the best method of sanitization? Thank you! Herbs |

A few things, you can take them out and place them in cups of water to do a complete dump, clean and refill. There is no problem there. I would do this sooner then later. Also how much nutes are you giving them?
The basil - I would remove the one that is doing worse. It seems like maybe the dome was touching the leaves prior to removing it.
The Cilantro - did you prune or top it? Also looks like there is two of them in there. I would remove the one that is doing worse.
Chives should be fine. All of mine get the tan tips. For that, if it were me I would just snip the tips off and leave it be.

Also I think the height of the light in the picture is correct.
These plants seem very young though to have gone through all the changes you listed. Often times it takes time for plants to react to changes in their environment. Some times it can be quite rapid when things are going wrong though. Often times healing damage happens at a slower pace and more damage from the original problem may be come visible over time.
Here's a post from Aerogarden on methods of sanitizing the gardens. I personally use the bleaching method they describe. However, based on what I'm seeing here, I don't think you have a pathogen in your garden. Are you seeing something in the basin or on the sponges that has you concerned about a pathogen? Seeds are pretty cheap so if you want to restart your garden, I don't think there is any harm. And as Shawn said if you want to hold onto some of them, and replant the rest that is an option. But all it costs is time to just see how things turn out with the changes you've made. |
