My strawberry crowns came in while I was in Lubbock! Got them planted this morning Way looking forward to this one, I LOVE strawberries but hate trying to beat the birds to them when I grow outdoors.

That's a lot of plants.. I think I had about that many in an 8x4 bed and they turned into a jungle in one season.. yes birds and squirrels, didn't get a single ripe berry.. GOOD LUCK I am interested to see how it goes!

They had their first feeding a few days ago - I did 10mL instead of the recommended 16, as I was nervous of getting the nutrient burn that others have had. They are still going strong!!

Very impressive! I have hesitated to try strawberries after the problems some have had.
Yours look great!

My mom was so jealous when I sent her a photo! She LOVES strawberries, but even with bird netting hers always get picked over if she’s not fast enough! She has a really lovely strawberry bed made from an old boat that had holes in the bottom so they filled it with dirt. Hopefully they have better luck keeping the birds off this year!

Maybe it is time to set-up a Christmas fund, save up & buy mom an AG Farm for Strawberries of her own? Alternatively, I know you are really creative and handy too...maybe you could fashion a new netting system?
I was watching an episode of Washington Grown and they had this mini segment on there with "tricks for raised bed gardens" and one of the items was this contraption that looked much like the canopy, if you will, of a covered wagon. They used a cover of plastic, but I'm betting you could find a netting of sorts that would allow air and sunshine in and keep the bird out? Something that can be easily detached for care and harvest times?
Just a thought. Anyway, your strawberries look great! What cha planning to do with them? Besides share with mom?

Oh, I've seen those types of covers! We'd have to do a net version for sure if we went that route, it gets too hot in the summer for plastic covers, though maybe a plastic version for winter/early spring would be good, to give the plants an early start. They had just draped the netting across the plants, elevated a little with some shorter gardening poles. The birds just landed on the netting and picked through the holes. Also the feral cats that like to live on their property like to lay in the boat (nice and cool because of the plants and water, and in a semi-shaded area), so they would pull the netting out of place. Something that curved over like the wagon-cover types, with some extra supports through the middle, may be just the thing! Not sure what I'll do with the berries if I end up getting lots!! Right now there's just a few to snack on in there. Maybe a pie if I get enough! I love strawberry pie DcKpvN

I love strawberry pie This isn't the show that I saw, but take a look at Part 3 of this Link - same idea, although the Washington Grown show had a raised bed about hip height. My kind of height!! They were suggesting it for the same purpose of extending the growing season. Anyway, if you use a net in the summer, you could change it out for plastic at the end of the season, to keep things going for a bit longer, like they want to do? One of my favorite things is Strawberry Trifle! Although, I make mine a bit different. I don't use booze in it, what for? I want to taste the strawberries! And then there's fresh strawberry ice cream...yum! Strawberry freezer jam...strawberry sundae...

Ooooh ice cream!!! I don’t usually care for it, but can’t go wrong with homemade strawberry or peach ice cream!
