I learned lettuce well but with other plants, especially herbaceous, I keep running into this issue of being uncertain whether its ok to pull or cut or otherwise disturb the growing thing. Now I believe I have several calendula, genovese basil, and to a lesser degree mini might tomato plants growing. The latter just looks like 1. Not sure about shishito peppers and bell peppers either. I can’t discern starter leaves, just several stems. The calendula is busiest. Its hard to see in the picture but I will try. Is it true that 1 plant doesn’t have more than 2 starter leaves, at most? How do you discern? The tomato pic: the 2 sets of starter leaves are the ones that are a bit red. I included a close up one of the bell peppers but the pic with the shishito and the bell peppers- from a distance- allows you to see the stems better. flic.kr/p/2kPWex3flic.kr/p/2kPZNtqflic.kr/p/2kPWez7flic.kr/p/2kPRgK8flic.kr/p/2kGuy8E

I pick up the pod, look at it from the side, and count how many stems are growing directly out of the pod. I cut off the weakest plants.
I will sometimes thin them to 2 plants, then wait a few days to see which one is stronger, then cut off the weaker one at the top of the pod.
I often can't tell how many plants there are from the top.

sherI just cleaned out all my units and it is easier to tell by pulling the pod out if the plastic thing and examining it carefully. That along with experience. I think my mistake with marjoram, which made me very wary about thinning herbs is that I pulled vs cut, which must have disturbed the marjoram roots too much. We will see what happens tomorrow because I trimmed a number of them, including parsley, cilantro and lavender, which are really bushy now. No wonder- I had at least 5 plants in each. I hope I did it right, otherwise its a learning lesson.

sherYes- thank you- I refer to the sponge when I say pod. I couldn’t think of the proper term! Its much easier to see when I slide it out a little. Thankfully my surgery went well. All the patients are alive!
