Can you grow larger varieties of tomatoes such as Early Girl in a farm xl I’ve seen some Aerogarden photos where people have grown larger tomatoes, but I don’t recall the specific type. I would think you would have to aim for patio/container type varieties that don’t grow so tall for tall Aerogardens. A quick search on Early Girl tomatoes suggest a height of 55 inches, so those are too tall. I can’t recall what all varieties of tomatoes that my husband has grown in his garden, but they all seem to get up to 6 feet or so. Wendy

The XL has a grow height of 36" I believe. So anything larger you would have to keep pruned to fit. There are many larger/taller plants that can be grown in the AG but of course those tall plants may not fit like we want them.

The largest tomato variety I've grown in the Farm XL is Oregon Spring Tomatoes. It's a bush-type slicer tomato variety that's a little on the shorter side, staying at around 3-4ft for me, but with the occasional branch extending past 6ft.
Another one I've tried is Sweet Million Cherry Tomatoes. It's a bush-type cherry tomato variety that grows to about 3-4ft, but can easily get to 6ft over time.
Some advice: - 1 plant max: Plant only one tomato per basket. The plant will get very big and take up all the space.
- Support: Have a trellis or plant ties available to support the plant and prevent it from wandering too much.
- Nutrients: Because it's a bigger plant, it'll need more nutrients. You may want to consider switching to a different brand of nutrients as the AG nutrients aren't cost-effective.
- Trim, trim, trim: As the plant grows, it'll produce lots of leaves and branches. In order to maintain air flow, you'll need to trim off leaves every so often. You may also want to trim down branches that decide to grow beyond your unit.
As for roots, they will get a bit crazy over time, but I've found them to be far more tame than pepper plants. Also, the tomatoes won't be as big as they would be if grown outside. But it's still fun to have.
I eventually want to try the 'Bush Champion II Tomato' variety, which is supposed to stay around 2-3 ft tall and may be a better fit.
