Yesterday we went to Lowe's to get some basic vegetables to plant outdoors. They had hundreds of flowers, shrubs, etc., but not a single vegetable!
I like to start my greens, beans, and small peppers and tomatoes from seed. But I like to buy starts for paste tomatoes, slicing tomatoes, and bell peppers.
Today we found what we needed at Walmart, but they didn't have the quantity and variety they usually have.
People are apparently serious about vegetable gardening this year!

They actually heard that a few months ago. Especially with this pandemic

Agreed! Folks are doing lots more gardening, since the lockdowns, etc. More time at home and more folks trying to stay healthy. Growing fresh herbs was my initial attraction to the AG's. Once the fun was discovered, other things followed. Out here at least, another thing that is lacking in stores is ketchup!! Go figure? Then, a friend pointed out, at the restaurant drive thru, if you ask for ketchup, even if you specify a number of packets, they just grab a big handful & toss that in the bag. So, there's a lot of waste on ketchup! I'm waiting for the announcement about how much additional waste we are creating during this past year. From all the "disposable" products that are being used in abundance now. Sigh.

Yeah there's been the same problem with seeds. Many seed nurseries have statements saying they're overwhelmed by the number of orders this year and last year and that it's been more difficult than usual due to the on-and-off lockdowns and the reduced staff numbers.
Admittedly though, I'm part of the many who started outdoor gardening since the pandemic, although AeroGarden is partly to blame for getting me hooked on growing herbs and veggies It's just been so much easier to garden outdoors now that I actually have time to spend fixing up the yard and tending to the plants, and it's a bonus having fresh lettuce, herbs and veggies to eat without having to stop at the grocery store.
But I got ahead of the game this year and started lots of plants from seed indoors. I'm just anxious for May 24th or so to transplant, as that's the last frost date for my area.

Similar issues with the Lowe’s and Walmart’s by me. Part of reasoning for the increase in indoor gardening is the technology of LEDs. I have used the fluorescent grow lighting in the past, and over time it became difficult to maintain.

If there's a local gardening group in your town/city/etc, it might be worth checking with them. A lot of first-time gardeners are starting more seedlings than they need, and then tossing or giving away the extras.
Here in our subdivision, a lot of people are putting signs up stating "Free Tomato Seedlings - Knock to Ask" or similar.
