My lettuce is one month old and I cut the entire thing off about 1/2 inch high to see if it will grow more leaves. I read leave 1 inch for regular lettuce, so for the minature AG lettuce, I left about 1/2 inch. Time will tell. What varieties of lettuce are you growing? |

I'm growing all the AG lettuce varieties, but the ones I cut off are a Tom Thumb butter head variety (seed not AG).

Parris Island romaine. After trying several varieties, it is our crispy favorite..
We never get tired of it. Add it to sandwiches, slice it thin to make a bed for taco salads, use it to make roll ups, and in salads. i enjoy just walking past it and picking a couple of leaves to graze on.

Agreed. Parris Island is a great one and seems to flourish in the AG. We have similar uses...  |

I do not like anything bitter or peppery so my preferences are Romaines. I like Jericho, Little Gems, Dragoons.

Have any of you had issues with the AG Marvel of 4 Seasons never germinating? Twice, I have reported this to AG, only to have them send me another Marvel of 4 Seasons pod which does not germinate. Now I don't bother reporting it, and I started ordering customized lettuce seed kits that don 't include M4S.
I've been toying with the idea of trying non-AG lettuce seeds. Does anyone have favorite varieties that they've grown successfully in their AG gardens?
Shawn, I'll have to check out the Romaine varieties you mentioned.

dianne, I buy all my lettuce seeds and put them in Parks Seed sponges.
If you go to Johnny's Select Seeds, they show a selection of lettuce seeds that do especially well in hydroponics.

I am also noticing the Marvel of 4 Seasons is the only one of mine not germinating at all, and it has been well over the time shown on the pod. I wasn't sure how long to wait, but now that I've read this, I'm going to replace it with the Parris Island. |

I wasn't sure how long to wait, but now that I've read this, I'm going to replace it with the Parris Island.  I feel like, how is AeroGarden not noticing that Marvel of 4 Seasons no longer performs? This is a fairly new development -- say, the last six months. I never had any problem with it before that. |

I'm wondering if some of the romaine varieties will be too tall for the Harvest, as there is only 12" of space available. Would it be best to go with a mini romaine type? Also wondering if some of the heading types will work in all 6 spaces or if they need more room to spread out. Getting my seed stock ordered so I can plant when the units arrive!

judib, If you use the AG method of harvesting 1/3 of a lettuce plant and letting it grow back, you should be able to grow Romaine with 12" of growing space. I've grown the AG Romaine in a Bounty without raising the lights a whole lot, and I don't think that it is a dwarf variety. Right now I have Swiss Chard growing in a Bounty with lights at 12-1/4 inches. It's fine to harvest now (medium-sized leaves), though I'd let it grow for a while longer if it were in one of my Farms.  In my experience, lettuce doesn't mind crowding. I usually grow only a couple of pods at a time, because I use lettuce mostly in sandwiches. If I grow more than a couple of pods, I end up with far more lettuce than I can use. My husband and I love fresh AG lettuce, though!

judib, I agree with lynnee using hte AG method. I have successfully also grown Romaines in the Harvest. I actually have about 4 or 5 varieties I enjoy.
