How do I transplant my tomato plant to a pot?

pollyanna, you simply place it in a pot with a good potting mix, sprinkle dirt in the gaps around the roots, tamp the dirt in gently, add more soil if needed, then water it in well.
The roots need no specisl treatment to adapt to the dirt.
After you water it in well the first time, be sure not to keep the soil too wet, or it will get root rot. Just water as needed.
It is amazing how easily they adapt to transplanting.
