See how I’m getting this dark ring around my cilantro? Is that ok or no? Has it happened to you? Well, it tasted great anyway . I had a hodge-podge of leftover produce and a leftover Costco hot dog, so I threw them all together. I had avocados that were getting too ripe, some red peppers I had roasted, some onions, a slice of bacon and this cilantro. And a couple of lemon basil leaves also from this garden. Sounds like a strange combination, but I can attest to the fact that, not only was it all great together, but that a hot dog is really a great vehicle for anything.

About a week later. Suddenly the basils are so full. I should separate them to give them more space. The cilantro, on the other hand, is not happy.

My last Cilantro was getting brown sooner then normal too.

That's how I know that my garden will no longer support a Cilantro plant. It's what always happens to me.
I've yet to see one actually bolt in an aerogarden. They always brown out first.

Mine always make it to bolting. If they get past germination, that is, lol. This is the 2nd time happening, both times in a new Harvest so it's feeling weird.
So, funny thing, last night I plucked a number of the biggest leaves off the basils, mostly to allow light to the more compact Greek basil, but beyond nibbling on a couple leaves with my 2 slices of pizza nirvana, I have no idea how else I ate them. And I know I did not throw them away. Scary to think I don't remember what else I ate with them. Calories, calories...

I rearranged these. They don’t look as pretty this way, but I wanted to give them more space. Front left: cilantro Back left: lemon basil Front right: dwarf Greek basil Back right: Genovese basil

Often wonder if roots from Basil plants strangle the cilantro or parsley roots.

Often wonder if roots from Basil plants strangle the cilantro or parsley roots. The basil roots are definitely gargantuan compared to the cilantro roots. I had a tough time getting them out of the hole. And, the cilantro is looking a little troubled, even though it’s still young. So I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a negative effect. I do need to remember to turn all pods like Shawn does.

I have (in my whisper voice) trimmed the roots when they goot too big or in the bay of the other roots.

I have too and think a number of my older plants could benefit from this at this point, as their root balls are displacing too much water. This is especially true in the smaller Harvests. I think as long as you don’t snip the thick feeder root you’re ok.

A severe chop of the lemon basil and a small harvest of the others brought the hood back down to the bottom level. I think I’ll use 2 spare holes to germinate more seeds while the hood is low. I hope the lemon basil comes back. My meal was delicious with the herbs.

Don't you love the smell you get in the kitchen when you cut the herbs Yes, it’s very fresh and bright. To think, we only ever had dried herbs growing up where I lived. Except parsley. There was always parsley around, but not even really for eating. More as a garnish. Kind of useless. Dried herbs definitely still have their place on cooking, because they do better in a long cooking stew or chili or sauce, but finishing a dish with fresh herbs is like nothing else. I don’t know why none of our parents were using them while we were kids and teens. Especially where I live, where you can grow them pretty much all year round.
