Ended this today. It flowered a bit but did not produce any tomatoes, and it grew out of control to the point that branches were coming out of the ventilation holes in the tent.
I'll be sticking to determinate varieties for indoor tomato plants from now on.

sounds like too much nitrogen and not enough potassium.. but I think I agree with you on the determinate for indoor for sure! Also, did you pollinate the flowers?

I did not manually pollinate the flowers, but I had a small fan in the tent that should have provided enough air flow to pollinate the flowers for me.

While I may not have gotten any tomatoes, I was pleased to discover zero algae or buildup in the bucket itself! It made cleaning almost as easy as just rinsing it out.
I will set up this bucket soon with another tomato plant, but I am running low on water so it will have to wait a few days.

ERR0R1755, do you mean you are running low on well water? If so, that's scary!

ERR0R1755, do you mean you are running low on well water? If so, that's scary! Sorry - no shortage of well water, but we have a salt softener - our water before softening comes out at around 2600 PPM, and nutrients won't even mix into the water, they just form a cloud at the bottom. After softening it is much lower, but the salt level is too high to grow any plants. I have to either buy distilled water (which can be expensive) or pick up RO water for free from a friend of mine. I've been getting RO water, 5-10 gallons at a time, but since the bucket uses 5 gallons, I can only start growing a plant right after I bring it back or I won't have enough water for other plants.

Oh! Thanks for explaining. I was worried a drought was depleting your well water.

ERR0R1755, we have a water softener too...using potassium instead of salt. Of course, that costs a good deal more than the regular salt. However, when we put in our water ionizer for drinking water, it was not supposed to use softened water, so we by-passed the softener and just use the whole house filter to get rid of all the junk in it...technical term there, "junk"...LOL and that un-softened water goes direct to the ionizer. You could have a spigot of some sort to access the water. Anyway, the filter isn't expensive and the replacement filter inside of it costs about 10 bucks. It lasts us a year and 2 years at our rental (she doesn't use as much water). I think it is this one - but I can find paperwork or ask our friend that installs them, if you like? Just something to consider. It isn't R/O, but it is clean water. It does help the softener do its thing too, so would not be a big waste if it doesn't work out for the plants?

That sounds very useful! Is it something that needs to be connected directly to the water system, or is it something that I could use to filter small batches of water at a time? I don't have the ability to make any alterations to the piping here, so all of my water would have to come from a sink or a bypass spigot that gives hard (not yet softened) water.

I'll post a picture of ours later today. You do need to have in connected into the system...there are other kinds that hook up to a faucet, I've not used one of those. More later...city tree trimmers here now. Sigh.

You know what, ERR0R1755? New plan...since you can't do alterations, how about something "inline"...the water spigot for the yard, that does not go thru the water softener, right? How about an inline filter from the hose bib? DH uses one here on the outside spigot that he uses to wash the vehicles. He doesn't want all the minerals for that. There are lots of options available. I pulled up the Amazon Page as an example. But, if you have a Walmart store nearby, they carry them. So does Camping World and other outdoor stores (we use one when camping to hook up the RV to unknown water supplies). Any place that has a plumbing aisle or camping equipment is likely to have them too. Just a thought. If you want to see how we did the whole house filter, I can grab a picture of that.

That looks like it would be worth a try! I'll pick one up, although I won't be able to try it until the spring. The hoses have to be shut off so the pipes don't freeze over the winter.

Good deal! Yeah, we have to turn off the outside water too. But hey, if it does work, don't stop visiting your friend that gives you water!
