It's time to start tracking my Fairy Tale eggplant, started in the Farm 12XL on 9/24/21. Three original AG pods, plus one pod that was started from a robust second AG pod sprout. Pods are presently sitting in the four corners of the grow deck. By today (10/18/21), the plants had lots of enormous leaves, so they got their first pruning. I removed all the lower leaves that were no longer getting any light, including several clusters that looked like suckers. No buds or blooms yet. Am pushing things by trying to grow four plants in the Farm 12 XL. Photos below were taken on 10/18/21, 10/10/21, and 10/3/21.

I grew those in 5-gallon buckets. Huge leaves. Good luck, I love 'em deep fried.

Lynee, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you will only be able to grow one plant there. I grew Fairy Tale Eggplants in 5-gallon buckets in 2015. One plant per bucket. Take a look. Each plant was 5-feet across.

Your photos are the proof, mike. (Beautiful!) I'm going to leave my eggplants in the Farm 12 XL for a little while longer, to see what happens. In a few days it will be time to add nutrients, and I'm going to look at the roots then. This is from the AG blog: "Something to remember about the Fairy Tale Eggplant is that much of the care is identical to any other flowering fruit or vegetable you may grow in an AeroGarden. It's important to give your plants room to grow, so we recommend putting no more than 3 seed pods into your tall garden (Bounty, Farm Plus or Farm XL) and covering the remaining holes with spacers." Won't be the first time that AG has recommended planting more pods than an AG can hold and produce healthy plants. The AG eggplant kits come with 3 pods and spacers. Looking at my plants, I'm really wondering about growing even ONE Fairy Tale eggplant in a Bounty.

Good luck. You will love the purple blooms. As I remember, the roots really filled the 5-gallon bucket. Since you have a smaller reservoir (2-gal) the plant will probably be quite a bit smaller. But you will still probably fit only one. I don't know. Those were my only eggplants.

You could produce a coffee-table book with your photos, mike ! I hope that I'll get at least a few blooms like yours.

I find AG's recommend plantings per unit is often off

Today I decided to take mike 's advice, and thin the Fairy Tale eggplants before they got any bigger. This is Day 36 for the eggplants. The roots looked very healthy, and so I only trimmed the roots enough to separate the plants. Two plants got to stay in their original positions, but I turned them a little to direct the roots away from the pump and the float. One plant had already grabbed the pump filter. One plant went into a corner of the empty side of the Farm Plus 24. It will have to share the light with the bell pepper (leaf at right) next door. I transplanted the plant with the largest leaves into soil outdoors. It's in my largest empty pot, in Miracle Gro potting soil. I don't know whether it will survive, because the nights are getting cold (40-50 degrees). It rarely freezes where I am, but it's mid-October. I could move it to the garage at night, but that's too much trouble. Now it's a matter of "wait and see".

Good job, lynnee! They look very happy! Keep turning them every day or so, for as long as you can, and that will make that nice, round root ball!

The Fairy Tale eggplants are all doing well. The one transplanted to soil seems the happiest of all. It's doing fine in today's windy rainstorm, too. The photo shows the eggplant on 10/21 and 10/23. The leaves straightened right up. The crack in the big lower leaf occurred during the transplanting.

Yours had lots of blooms, Sher. So far no blooms, just leaves.

Your plants have recently experienced a major shock to their systems. The fact they look as good as they they do right now is a credit to how much care you took in making the change, Give them time.

To my surprise, the eggplant that went into planting mix outdoors seems happiest of all. The only thing I did was make sure that the soil was fully saturated (and it rained 4" on Sunday). I always water the heck out of transplants for the first few days. I figure that if they've been growing in water, they won't mind having wet roots. 😄
I just remembered something, though. The potting soil has MiracleGro in it, supposedly good for 6 months. Maybe the plant likes the exra nutes. 😄

All of the Fairy Tale eggplants are doing well, without buds as yet. They do like having their personal space! The outdoors plant is the tallest, despite overnight temperatures in the mid-fifties. The two plants in the Farm XL are the shortest. The transplant by itself in the Farm Plus has really spread out.

It's really interesting to see the way different environments affect growth.

It's Day 46, and the two eggplants in the Farm 12 XL have flower buds. The solo plant has buds too, I think. The outdoors plant is still producing leaves. It's been cold out, with daytime highs in the sixties.
