This rhubarb was started from seed on Oct 31, 2021 - and transplanted on Nov 04, 2021. The seed came from a rhubarb plant that is growing outdoors, it is several years old but I do not know what cultivar it is, if it has one. For the wick I am using a strip of cloth from an old tattered shirt, and I am trying out the VitaSea All Purpose Organic Fertilizer for nutrients. The top layer is perlite with a light dusting of crushed egg shells - the white, combined with the rough/dry surface of the perlite, is supposed to deter any gnats from laying eggs in the soil. I applied perlite and egg shells to my other wicker bottles as well.

Ooooo...Rhubarb is a favorite around our house! With or without strawberries!
I picked up a Strawberry Rhubarb pie at the Produce/Butcher shop this week. It is the frozen kind from The Willamette Pie Co. I'm going to bake it on Thanksgiving for our dessert. We'll get the lovely smells without any of the work! Yum!
I'll enjoy following this project!

Due to ongoing issues with fungus gnats, I have decided to end all of my wicker bottle projects. The issue is that the sand deters them, but it forms a hard "crust" at the top... which then over time leads to gaps between the plastic and the sand where the gnats can reach the soil.
I will be trying this again in the future, but on a larger scale so that the water cannot wick all the way up to the surface.

It's too bad that you have to end the wicker bottle projects so soon, but I can't weep for the cute little rhubarb. I cannot abide rhubarb. 🙂
