AG sold me on microgreens, but the AG microgreens insert is noisy and ties up a Bounty garden. True Leaf Market sent me an email ad for the Hamama Grow Kit, which doesn't require anything more than water and indoor lighting. I decided to give it a try. (I decided against the version with the bamboo tray, which adds many, many dollars to the startup kit price. ) Today I set up the Hamama with a Kale seed quilt, in my kitchen which has overhead fluorescent lighting for 16 hours a day. The seed quilt actually floats on the water! Harvest is in 10 days. Progress photos to come as appropriate.     P.S. I hope that it's okay to post this in Greens rather than Other Systems. It maybe should be moved. |

Looks interesting. Too bad I do not like Micros/ But maybe if I find cilantro in one I will give that a try. Following.

My DH grew a Microgreens kit from True Leaf too. He was doing it to make greens for the pups, as sometimes they crave the chlorophyll or something? Fortunately, he did his experiment upstairs in the bonus room, we don't use much. He grew just Wheatgrass, as I recall. It was quite stinky. Maybe because there isn't any circulating pump?

Day 4. I've peeled back the coverings on the planted areas. No odor so far, but I've added water to keep the level at the fill line. (It's not supposed to need water unless you live in a dry climate.)  |

Day 8. Harvested the kale microgreens; the entire seed quilt yielded enough for about two sandwiches. The heap in the photo is on a dessert plate. I'm disappointed with the kit. The microgreens are spindly, and only about 2/3 of the seeds germinated. The AG microgreens system produced much more substantial microgreens crops. The flavor was pretty bland, similar to the AG microgreens. I have three more seed quilts, and will discard the system after using them up. At grow's end, there was a large, thick coconut coir mat left for composting. Water needed to be added regularly, so this was not a set-up-and-forget project.  |

When Mikey grew them upstairs, they called for being in the dark for so long, before starting up the light...if I recall? I think he had to keep them covered or something. Although, I tried to stay out of it!

Mine just say to put them in the tray filled with water, and to let them get light from the room's ceiling fixture. I started the broccoli quilt today. A cheese and kale greens sandwich was what I had for lunch today. It tasted fine, but not very strongly of kale.  |

I got a kit during lockdown!
I should resuscitate it. I think I'll cut the quilt up and start a few days apart. It seems storing them is kind of counterproductive and I think my family would object to eating them every day!

penguicular, let us know how well yours germinate. My seed quilts were purchased on sale, so they may have been nearly past the sell-by date when I purchased them, but many of the seeds didn't sprout.
