Got my wife a AG for Christmas. We planted Lettuce and herbs last night. We have well water, I was nervous about using our water so I went out and bought 5 gallons of Poland Springs water.
I would love the opinion of people who have experience with using the AG.
Thanks Ron

Hi Ron,
Where I live I use regular tap water. My plants seem to like it. However I know those with soft water should not use it with the units. Some use Reverse Osmosis while others use bottled. I am not sure about well water. I can not remember off the top of my head if anyone here uses it or not.

I have well water but the PPM is too high to use, so I have to use Reverse Osmosis water.
I have friends though who are able to use well water without any issue - if you want to do a simple test without buying anything new, you can fill up a gallon jug with your well water, add 6ml (or a cap and a half) of AG nutrients to the jug, and shake it. Then let it sit somewhere dark for 24 hours.
If you see a cloud/fog form, or anything other than clear water at the bottom of the jug after 24 hours, then that means the nutrients are either not mixing with your well water (due to a high PPM) or they are reacting to something in your well water, and you will want to avoid using it for the AeroGarden.

sher used well water with a PH of 7, I think I remember. Very neutral water. Although she's in the process of moving and probably won't have a well in the new place. Anyway, point being, the well water worked very nicely for her. At my house, we have artesian spring/well water from about 1/2 mile away. Although it is supplied thru our PUD. It is very high in minerals so we do use a water conditioner and softener too...but we use potassium to soften the water as the unit flushes into our yard and we don't want to kill everything out there! In your place, I think I would try using your well water and if it doesn't work out, then I would look at ways to make that work, if possible. My thinking is, if you enjoy hydroponics and do any expansion of the gardens, bringing water in can become a hassle? At least, it would be to me. Everyone is different!

I’m not sure what their ph or ppm is, but my parents use their well water in AG. They do have a water softener, so there’s not a ton of mineral buildup, but their softener doesn’t use any chemicals or salt. Their water is high in sulfur. But their lettuce grows fine in AG and they also use it to start their plants for outdoors with no problems.

Can we assume that the RO water is working out for you and your gardens?

I’m on a well but have water barrel collection, so have been using rainwater. I did start my first unit with my well water before researching water issues in these. I read that seeds won’t germinate in well water, but I have had no issues germinating and growing in that unit, seems like the other ones for the most part.

My parents are on well water too, and they've had no problems with germination using it in AG either. I imagine that varies as wildly as what's in different peoples' well water though.

i've used almost every kind of water, only one i really had trouble with was my tap (the ppm's were just crazy high without anything added to it!), now i only use RO water cause i started being really really picky about what my plants get.

Good for you, darais211! I mean, the water is important to the end product that you'll be eating! Well, unless you are growing flowers and then maybe you aren't eating them...but there are edible flowers too! And, welcome to AGA! Thanks for jumping in there with your experiences! That's what makes AGA such a great place...the sharing of info and experiences!

Thankfully all my plants like my tap water. I have never tried any other kind.

yes... now that being said, I started with Aquariums, and already understand the challenges starting with RO or RODI water. with what I have learned with the aerogarden is that when monitoring nutrient levels and ph, it is almost imperative to start with RO water... Tap water / well water all have added trace elements and that is just not good for a precise nutrient mix or consistency. I have really bad tap water where I live, fed by a local reservoir... and the well water is super hard. I have found that the RO water I get from the hot tub store is the best all around for aquarium and garden. I am also in the market to buy a system like this for home use.
