I have this set up for some bare root strawberry plants that I ordered too early. They are very happy and growing faster than the one plant I potted up. They look like they have buds already, but I haven't put any nutrients in the water bc the cat likes to drink out of it! I'm not sure how they'll adjust to soil, but it's about 5 more weeks until last frost =(
I might try keeping some in my no-tech hydroponic set up!
P.S. aquarium air pumps come in different sizes, so get one that's big enough to move air in your system

penguicular, I hope you can post some photos eventually! I'm kind of fascinated by strawberry projects right now. What kind of strawberries are you growing?

I ordered Seascape. Bare root plants go pretty fast around here and last year I ended up with the last dried out bunch and they were miserable. This year I ordered them on Amazon and they were surprisingly healthy, but about 8-10 weeks too early.

They have really long roots, so they're just leaning on the side in a few inches of water. I left some of the roots exposed for air, but I guess the bubbler takes care of that! I might have to get some baskets and turn this into a real (and cat-proof) hydroponic set up and plant some others when it warms up outside.
