What a wonderful project! The best part is getting varieties not often found at nurseries.

The flower garden is coming along, but only the Bluebell has produced flower buds. The Blue Iris failed to germinate. These should probably be transplanted to pots. I'm going to wait a little longer, though.

Day 41. The plants in this experimental garden were leggy (except for the bird's eye and dwarf sunflower in back), and the petunias were taking over. All but the pretty bluebells had healthy, snow-white roots. Today I pulled the petunias and transplanted them outdoors. They went straight out into the afternoon sun on a moderately warm day, so they don't look too good. I'm not sure that they'll survive, because the pot is too shallow to properly accommodate the roots. Also I was in a hurry when I potted them. The other plants are calendulas and dianthus from the February GAL. I pruned the remaining AG plants (bluebells, bird's eye, sunflower, Chinese lanterns) to make them fit the garden better. The bluebell had three flowers, and I knocked one off, darn it! The bluebell may have lost its healthy roots when the petunias came out. I hope that it will survive, because it has lots of buds, and the flowers are that intense blue. Not a pretty picture, but hopefully I'm learning from my mistakes.

I hope the petunias survive, lynnee. If not, the dianthus should spread to fill that spot.
I do hope the bluebells thrive. That blue is stunning. I can't remember ever seeing them growing. They must not like the deep South.

This reminds me I have to take the daisies out of the shed. I had to put them in there are it went into the 30's the past few nights.
Your garden will fill out nicely as they all come in.

The outdoor petunias look fine this morning, and more of the AG bluebells have opened. Yay!

Day 52. Today I terminated the Chinese Lantern plant, because it was growing very fast, and producing an unsettling number of extremely robust runners. Fortunately I checked for invasiveness before transplanting it outdoors, because Chinese Lanterns are highly invasive. The blossoms are large and quite beautiful. The flower garden is now reduced to Bluebells, Bird's Eye (no sign of blooms), and a Dwarf Sunflower. I have high hopes for the sunflower, which supposedly grows no taller than 16". The flower garden and the sunflower after removal of the Chinese Lantern.

That's a shame about the Chinese Lantern, but it's a good thing you checked. At least you got to enjoy the pretty flowers for a while!

maskedsonnet, Sunflowers can grow in an AG. Someone a while back grew them and they were very short. I will have to look for that sunflower name. I actually think I may have a packet here although it would be old as I bought it before I knew I needed another surgery.
lynnee I am sorry about the Chinese Lantern but the Bluebells and Sunflower should be wonderful and look at the Sunflower getting ready to bloom.
