Day 1. Remaining Burpee Albion Strawberry Crowns planted (13 total, 1 in Kratky jar). Burpee sells strawberry crowns in batches of 25, so these 13 are part of the same batch that has done so well. They have been in the garage, and looked okay except for some possible mold on one crown. Soaked crowns in warm water (30 minutes minimum), and washed off all the dirt. Removed runners and soft vegetable matter from crowns. Planted in split AG sponges with crowns at deck level. AG settings at 15 hours of light and 60/00 minutes for the pump (always on). Considered going with AG nutes alone, but reconsidered because experience with the first batch proves that the plants will need extra CalMag. Started with 24ml AG nutes, 10 ml CalMag, 5 ml Koolbloom. Rinse and refill every 7 days, maintain pH at 6.0-7.0.

I hope that these turn out to be as healthy and productive as their siblings!

Day 3. The strawberry crowns are dead. The photo below compares the garden at 3 days (no change from the first day) with the first garden from the same Burpee shipment of strawberry crowns at 3 days. (Sorry about taking the photos from such different angles.) The first garden was planted back on February 23. What you should do, if you can't plant all of your strawberry crowns (or other bare root plants) right away, is keep the plants cool and the roots moist. I didn't do either, and let the roots dry out. You only have a couple of weeks to delay planting, anyway. A few plants might have started growing, because their roots were still slightly plump. However, I didn't want to risk mold or mildew developing and spreading to the neighboring strawberry garden that is doing well.

I am sorry they died on you. Will you be ordering more to plant?

Burpee is having a 30% off sale, so I decided to order an assortment of 3 new-to-me varieties of bare root strawberries, Shawn. That should be interesting enough to make it worth the extra work required for growing strawberries!
