Last fall we found a bunch of Eastern Black Swallowtail butterfly caterpillars munching on our carrot tops so I moved them to the Parsley which they like better, then eventually taking the last few before the frost inside in a small mesh butterfly enclosure. I gave them the parsley in a glass of water and they ate an pooped for a week or so. One died and eventually the other 3 spun their cocoons. They were moved to a plastic Kriter keeper box and put in the garage to overwinter. A couple days ago, I checked on them as it was hot in the garage. So I moved them to a shaded spot on the back porch. Today my wife noticed one had hatched!.. We opened the lid and were going to let it out in the enclosure but he did not seem ready. I was goggling to see what to do, and it said he would be ready to fly in a few hours. Not knowing how long he had been out, I was looking to find out what to feed him if we kept him in another day. My wife went in the house for something and when I looked up from the phone, he was gone! Will have to pay closer attention for the next one! Sorry, forgot to shrink the photos.

How beautiful! And you saved it! Is it flying completely free now?

I hope.. was there and we took the eye off the baby and he was gone! Cat didn't move from his place of lounging so we assume he flew away, could not find him anywhere. Yes he was a boy.. website said lots of yellow spots male lots of blue spots female. :-)

What a beautiful butterfly. It is nice you were able to save him and then let him free.
