Here's another reason to grow lettuce in an AG! The story from the San Jose Mercury News says that crop disease in the Salinas Valley is causing a nationwide lettuce shortage. The price is for iceberg lettuce at an upscale East S.F. Bay Area grocery store.  |

I never thought I'd use my Farms for greens. But that is just what I'm about to do. I just ordered Jericho Lettuce, Joi Choi, Space F1 Spinach, Italian Plain Leaf Organic Parsley, Large Leaf Italian Organic Basil, and Fernleaf Dill Seeds to fill my Farm Plus'. I need more veggies in my diet. As much as I love peppers, they take too long.

I would use my greens tote, but I have never got the lighting the way I like it.

I never thought I'd use my Farms for greens. But that is just what I'm about to do. After growing lettuce in a couple of Harvests and enjoying a fresh salad every few days it crossed my mind that growing lettuce in a Farm would not be a bad idea. Good luck with your greens.

I've always used a Farm for my lettuce grows. I like the space it provides. Crowded lettuce is not a good thing. Man, you've gotta have a big need/craving for iceberg lettuce to pay that price! The heads of iceberg, here in the PNW, are very loose. I'm betting those are similar?  |

campingcorgis, I didn't check out the actual heads of lettuce, so don't know whether the heads are firm or not. The newspaper photo shows a display from The Piedmont Grocery, which is an upscale market in the tony Oakland hills--it is expensive even by the very expensive Bay Area standards. It's sort of like the "French Laundry" of grocery stores!  The news story went on to say that iceberg was $7.50 per head at other Bay Area stores. I actually stopped buying grocery store lettuce when I discovered AG lettuce. It's easy to grow and tastes better!

We have two Bounties which I keep full of lettuce using an alternating start a few weeks apart. This keeps my wife in lettuce daily :-)
We also do two bounties with two tomato plants in each and that supplies us with plenty of tomatoes.
As I mentioned before soon one of the bounties will get a Fairytale eggplant, I am just waiting for one of the toms to give up. Over a year on all four...

I have my Farm Basic sitting empty, I think I am going to stsrt some herbs on one side and lettuce on the other

Oh! Can you tell me more about your lettuce supply? I'm trying to figure out how many plants I'm going to need if I want to eat a salad a day (or, rather, a wrap a day). I usually grow 40 plants out in the soil and then I can't keep up but I'm hoping the hydroponics will mean significantly more leafs  |
