...perhaps I can leverage helping him out into an AG Bounty Elite if a sale should happen for Black Friday ... He was actually telling me there was a deal for an AG Sprout at $35 on Woot, but I'm not too interested in the Sprout size. The regular Bounty is on sale on Aerogarden.com for $155, and there is a coupon for $20 that works. Coupon code is "CC20." Hard to pass up a Bounty for $135!!

Currently suffering from AG Overload, I'm going to terminate several gardens today. The Iznik is getting trashed; it was a good producer but I accidentally broke off the grow tip when it was only about 18" long and it doesn't seem to be thriving though I did get 5 or 6 nice cukes from it. I'm also dumping some past-its-prime parsley and a couple of pepper plants. I don't plan to re-plant those gardens right away.

I also have 4 or 5 empty gardens at the moment. I’m focusing on planting my winter crops outside.

Been busy, so not much time to be on here. However, a first TEENY TINY harvest!
I clipped 3 Tatsoi leaves, from plants that were starting to shade other plants. Two for me to taste, one for hubby. We both liked it!

Today I cleaned out 3 gardens and a Kratky jar. The banana pepper in the jar is still going strong so I just did an "R&R" and refilled with fresh water/nutes. In 2 Bounties I started some Tom Thumb peas and a pickling variety of cucumbers. I took one Harvest Elite out of service for a while.

I ordered the sale Bounty! Just too hard to resist at that price! Many, many thanks for the coupon code! I hope the 40W light will be OK for growing taller greens like chard. I did see a video where a guy compared lettuce in his Bounty vs. a Bounty Elite and he felt he got stockier and sturdier lettuce with the Elite model because of the 50W light. But it's darn hard to justify $260 vs. $135. And chances are I wouldn't ever use the fancier features. If I squeeze things around in my office, I can hopefully fit it upstairs next to the 6 Elite+. I was tempted to get two, but resisted. If I like it, there will be other sales at future dates. Meanwhile, I might as well get use out of the existing gardens and supplies.

I never tried peas, though I did do green beans way back when!

SPEAKING OF GREEN BEANS...
I'm about to start my first adventure with bush beans. The variety is called Empress green beans.
Does anybody have any words of wisdom for me?

How to catch an elephant. You dig a hole and sprinkle ashes in it then line peas around the outside. When the elephant comes to take a pea you kick him in the ash hole.

Well, I first tried an AG green bean pod kit ... which failed entirely due to mold! After which, I grew Earliserve Bush Beans and those did quite well. I had (according to my old notes from 2009) some 30 tiny beans at a month in. My notes say the plants were looking a bit ragged after a couple months, but that I'd gotten some 84 beans in 2 months, was pleased with that and retired the garden. So overall, I felt it was a success. But of course, maybe I did everything wrong and it should have grown many more, LOL! Entirely possible, since there's bits in the notes about leaves turning yellow, then me adding nutrients and them turning green and happy again. I was using an odd mix of nutrients, some AG, some not. The notes said I used AG booster tabs at intervals. I did have some trouble at first with excess moisture on the leaves, it looked like a blamed rainforest jungle, but putting a fan on the garden helped. It was a pretty garden to look at as well! I ate most of my beans raw on salads, because if you haven't had baby green beans, they are pretty tasty when small. Some cats really like them too, so be warned! Have fun!

Thanks pfunnyjoy! That's useful information. I can't believe you keep extensive notes.

pfunnyjoy, have you ever grown peas? I love fresh peas, but production was so poor with Tom Thumbs, I gave up on the whole idea. I'd love to replicate your green bean experience with peas!

Thanks pfunnyjoy ! That's useful information. I can't believe you keep extensive notes. I used to. I haven't so far been good about it on the three I have going, but I may start a log for the Tatsoi while I can still sort of remember what's what, LOL! As cluttered as my computer has become over the years, it's a wonder I didn't delete the old garden logs, but then I always kind of wanted to get back to growing, so I kept the files, figuring it might help me at a future date.

pfunnyjoy , have you ever grown peas? I love fresh peas, but production was so poor with Tom Thumbs, I gave up on the whole idea. I'd love to replicate your green bean experience with peas! Sorry, no peas, but I've always wanted to try snow peas, or sugar pod peas or something like that. My notes said I used Schultz Bloom Food or something like that with the green beans to help them flower. This was before I started with the GH Flora nutrients. But that green bean garden was a real mix of whatever nutrients I had on hand. This was back in the day where AG had little nutrient TABLETS! My growing wasn't that extensive really, more greens than anything. I remember doing a garden of mixed lettuces (mixed seed packet) that also had chervil. And I remember I enjoyed the chervil, though initially it didn't do well, it took off at one point after I'd done a bit of lettuce harvesting and went crazy. Still going after the lettuces had bolted. Chard was one of my staples, I thought it did well in AG and lots of harvest! I did one of the AG red heirloom tomato kits and it was fun, but took a long time. Also a baby belle pepper. Also fun, but I decided I preferred the big, chunky grocery store full-size bell peppers for eating. I'd love to try jalapenos some time though! And let them ripen to red! I'm hoping to get some Italian parsley seeds, Italian dandelion, chard, romaine and cilantro. I really, really want parsley and cilantro around for some green juice recipes I've seen. Getting excited about the Tatsoi, I think I'm going to be able to harvest some leaves from all the plants soon!

Day 19 (today) in the Classic 7 Tatsoi garden. I've sanitized all the current garden grow domes, plus the 2 sponges from the AG lettuce that didn't sprout, and the cages. All drying now, utilizing the breeze from the fan on the garden, LOL! I just use a little dilute bleach water and rinse really well. As you can see, the Tatsoi seem very happy! I might harvest a few outer leaves today for my salad. Day 19 (yesterday) in the Harvest Slim Elite AG lettuce garden. Oddly, the two lettuces on the left are smaller than those on the right, even though all these germinated at about the same time. I might grab a couple leaves from the right hand ones. The old plant spacers don't fit the new garden very well, and get easily tipped and knocked around. The plastic underneath is transparent and might let some light through, so I went ahead and ordered a spacer pack from Aerogarden when I ordered the Bounty (with lettuce kit). I think I'll like the basic black look better anyway. Remains to be seen if the newer spacers work on the old gardens, so I may have to keep both around. Day 16 (yesterday) for the 6 Elite+ Tatsoi in my office. Due for nutrients, but I may or may not get it done today. I figure they can hold until tomorrow if they have to, it's two plants with all the nutrients to themselves. But I do need to get it done soon! I rinsed out my old siphoning tube yesterday.

Harvested! Nine little Tatsoi leaves and 4 lettuce leaves. I topped my salad with some balsamic vinegar, avocado, and European sardines in olive oil. It was good!

Not so much 'today', but lots of AG maintenance this past weekend. Rinsed & refilled 2 Bounty's (AG Cukes & AG Mega Cherry tomatoes). Rinsed & refilled the Harvest Slim with Tasoi planted - also moved 2 plants to Kratky jars, leaving 2 in the units Rinsed & refilled a Harvest with lettuce. Topped off multiple Kratky jars. The AG Mega Cherry tomatoes are finally ripening. I think I've picked about 9 or 10 nice sized ripe cherry tomatoes so far (today is day 84). The AG cukes look totally ratty, but still produce 6-7 small cucumbers each week: The Tatsoi (planted 10/1) after moving the other 2 plants to Kratky: Time to add the Trellis before the Iznik takes over the livingroom. The plant on the right side is a semi-determinate bush tomato (hoping for tomato sandwiches!) If you've ever wondered how algae impacts your plants - these Thyme plants were planted at the same time, same seeds, same nutrients, same lights. The only difference is - the one in the front was in a blue jar, which allowed algae to grow. Just changed it out to the amber jar, but amazing difference. The one in the back has been trimmed a couple times: Just some random Kratky jars: Happy Monday, everyone!
