So have I been doing this wrong? I have been chucking in a capful of AG juice when I start a new garden because all the AG docs say to do that. Better as a standard practice to wait for sprouts before I feed? Will I get better sprout percentage? I seem to frequently lose one to mold. I have one Harvest that's 0-for-12, but I figured that was just bad AG pods. No, you're not doing anything wrong. Some people (I'm looking at you, "Aerogarden Experiments Guy") say to hold off on adding nutes until the seeds have sprouted. I've done it both ways and it does seem like I have less algae in the plain water startup, but either way is fine. I think there are so many other variables (water quality, temperature, etc.) that it's hard to quantify. Thanks. I don't so much have an algae problem as I have a 'not germinating and then developing white mold' problem, so I wondered if maybe adding AG Juice at the start was contributing. That one Harvest Slim that's 0-for-12 initially had 6 pods with Gaea's Blessing Buttercrunch, and after 3 weeks (wanted to give them every chance), all I had was 6 pods of white mold. I tossed the pods and gave the Harvest a good cleaning with white vinegar. I even broke the deck apart, and I tested to make sure the pump was running. Then I planted 6 AG chives pods, and again after 3 weeks, nothing but mold. So I again threw out the pods, broke it down, and cleaned the hell out of it again. This time I planted some no-name chives I got off the internet. No-name but these did sprout for me in a batch back at the start of the year. These were planted about 5 days ago. Makes me wonder if that Harvest Slim is cursed.

Seems like it's just the luck of the draw sometimes. I have 2 banana pepper pods in a Bounty right now. One has sprouted and the other has algae and no germination. They are the same batch of pods, same water, same conditions... different outcome. Kind of like my kids.

Today I caved to the fact that I'm kinda swamped with household demands, and added plant food and supplements to my current AGs without doing their biweekly R&Rs. They'll be okay for another couple of weeks, I think, because I didn't do R&Rs at all for the first couple of years that I was using the AGs. Didn't know any better! I started doing R&Rs every two weeks from week 6 after a lovely producing green pepper plant died almost overnight from root rot. My current AGs have developing Homeslice tomatoes, upcoming AG bell peppers, blooming Orange Hat tomatos, petunia seedlings, a blooming Aloha pepper, a burgeoning herb garden, and rather sickly lettuce (Tennis Ball, Devil's Ear, Crisp Mint). It's been too hot in the room for lettuce (except, apparently, for that marvelous Merlot).

I have been having the same problem with my pods. Planted pepper and tomato seeds in a Harvest to move outside - nothing. Replanted and still nothing. After 2 weeks my seeds seem to have disintegrated. Stuck some cucumber seeds in and I am 1 for 6. Moved that outside and cleaned unit by taking apart and then running the Aerogarden cleaner through it. Planted 3 Merlot and 3 Super Jericho seeds I just purchased. -nothing. Cleaned out sponges and replanted. I am 2 for 6. I am thinking it may be the no name brand sponges I bought on Amazon. When dry they are slightly smaller than Aerogarden sponges but when wet they are the correct size. Used a different sponge on my 1 orange Hat which actually has 2 stems from 1 seed. My Veranda Reds with sell date of 11/23 have not germinated.

Sometimes patience is all you need for non-germinating pods. Right now I have one pod in a Bounty full of petunias that is about a month behind all of the others. I'll get a photo, as it's kind of striking. Also, the Harvests don't have lights as strong as the Bounties. I can hardly grow anything in a Sprout, because the light is only 20 watts and I'm spoiled by the 60-watt Bounties.

Here's the photo of the late-germinating petunia, at 28 days. I need to move it and some of the other pods into a vacant Bounty. None of these are really large enough to transplant outdoors yet. So in your expert opinion, would you say I should: A. Use different sponges B. Use different seeds (although my Merlot and Super Jericho were just purchased) C. Use a Bounty for starting the seeds since the light is stronger D. All of the above E. None of the above - just replant and try again. Both the lettuce and the tomatoes are in Harvests. Waiting longer does not seem to be the answer since my seeds seem to have just “disappeared “ I can’t even see them in the sponge unlike yours.

swimmom500, your seeds that have disappeared are probably duds by now. However, a few things that seem to help with germination in general are: (1) Plant at least one seed on top of the sponge. Some AG sponges have huge central holes, and seeds that fall all the way down may not get enough light to grow up above the deck. Depends on the plant. (2) With pelleted seeds, which I think my slowpokes were, plant atop the sponge and be sure that the sponge stays wet. You can pour water from the top, or change the pump setting to "always on" in AGs that let you adjust pump settings. (3) In general, set the pump to "always on", and check from time to time that the AG hasn't reset the pump when changing from "germination mode" to "high growth mode". I always add the recommended amount of AG nutrients at startup. Sometimes my seeds get white fuzz, but usually the plants grow anyway. As AG says, seeds have a mind of their own. But some AG pods are definitely duds. And some seeds, like cilantro and spinach, are hard to get started, no matter the source. The odds with these improve if you use the paper towel method. I honestly don't know whether more light helps with germination! But I do find that it's easier to grow everything in a Bounty than in a Harvest or Sprout.

swimmom500, my guess is that you planted the Merlot seeds too deep in the sponge. The seeds are tiny, and if they fall far down inside the center hole, they may actually be in water. Merlot is usually very easy to grow.

Y'all, I had to take a break from my gardens, just got overwhelmed, but now the days are getting shorter, I want to clean the poor gardens out and get a few going to have all that nice light around me. Probably just for fresh greens and herbs.
But has anyone been to the AG site recently? I hadn't, but on my Reddit feed this morning was someone posting that Aerogarden is closing its doors! So, not taking anything on Reddit at face value, I headed my browser over to the actual site, and it seems to be true.
Closing, and selling product from the site until October 7; Amazon until the end of the year.
I'm feeling so sad about this! The end of an era. I hope it won't be the end of this forum though. I'm hoping the products I have will serve for a long time yet.

Today I'm back on cleaning up gardens. Just the Harvest models at present, I've got pumps disassembled and soaking in vinegar water, plus a couple reservoir bowls that need additional cleanup. I did the decks yesterday, just took my tub that I use to set the Bounty decks in for R&R, filled it with cleaning vinegar and let everything have a good long soak.
The decks are all looking great again, the crusty crud came off with gentle application of silicone scrubbies, I used a toothbrush on the interior grooves and spouts and that all came nicely clean too.
I have learned my lesson, don't have too many gardens going at once, and especially not if growing stuff besides greens. I can deal with greens easier than I can deal with things like tomatoes and ground cherries!

My 89 day old Albino Bullnose peppers. Today they got a trimming of the top leaves. The plants are surprisingly compact. They don't need much trimming. I tried one as it is now and it's more like a celery/lettuce taste with a tiny back end of a green pepper. I really don't like green peppers. I love orange/yellow/red peppers though. These are supposed to be a mild version of those. I'm waiting until they turn orange/red to harvest them - not sure how much longer they will take to get there.

Agreed! Even though I'm not sure I could easily deal with pepper plants if I had to root trim, I may have to try, at least once. I love sweet peppers, green, yellow, orange, red!

Planted more Tatsoi tonight. In a Harvest Slim, in the office. Have had too many woes trying in the kitchen near the air purifier.
Fingers crossed! I have really missed having the Tatsoi available for both juicing and wilted in scrambled eggs. I missed the extra light in my office even more, things just got cheerier!

Yesterday I clean my Aerogarden Bounty Elite. Today I put in Cucumbers seeds in. What setting should I do for cucumber?

Yesterday I clean my Aerogarden Bounty Elite. Today I put in Cucumbers seeds in. What setting should I do for cucumber? I use vegetable or peppers. It isn't really important, because the "select garden type" settings only seem to control how many hours the lights are on during the day. This automatic setting only varies by 30 minutes, if memory serves.

Like my lettuce never sets the pump to always on but, over time with tomatoes it sure does(Hight Grow Rate).

Could be that AG messes with the pump timing in the different gardens, but I set my pumps to always on from the very start for everything. Doing this helps with pelleted seeds, but seems to help with germination, too. In general, everything will grow with any garden setting, but things may grow faster if the appropriate garden is chosen.

These are much more easy to care for than the regular bell peppers. And they flower/fruit like crazy! They are shorter, have less roots, and require very little pruning. And even though I ate one pepper before it changed color, it was still quite tasty. I got my seeds from Baker Creek. Albino peppers
