Has anyone heard of using Root Riot Plant Starter Cubes in place of the Grow anything kits? Check out this video

Has anyone heard of using Root Riot Plant Starter Cubes in place of the Grow anything kits? I don't buy the grow anything kits, I usually just save my plastic cages and clear grow domes (I've amassed way too many), and then I buy "plugs" - I don't like the root riot ones personally, I don't like needing to cut them to size. I buy the Park Seed Bio-Dome sponge refills (the 60-cell size fit perfectly in the AG plastic cages). You can also find tons of options for sponges on Amazon - just search for Aerogarden sponge refills. |

I just bought the Park seed 60-cell refill. Unlike the other brands I've tried, the Park sponges are moist in the bag. Are they suppose to be? It seems to me that being moist they would encourage mold growth after you open the bag. Are yours moist?

I like the fact you can push them in the hole and not have to worry about light getting in, the video says they do not need to be trimmed if used without the cage

Yes - they always come slightly moist. I actually like that about them. I've been using them for years, and have never had an issue with algae or mold. |

I wonder how those Root Riot cubes will do with algae? I sometimes get algae on the top of a regular AG grow sponge (under the label), especially if the seeds are not germinating and it takes a week or so. Seems like a wet sponge under the light might encourage algae...

badmwnrizn --if you try them, report back and let us know what you think. I would not be worried about algae on the outside. Even if it grows on top as long as they block all light from getting in the reservoir the algae can't grow on the roots. Right? Even with the covers on the cages they still can't block all the light, but the cube when pushed into the holes without the cages block all the light. I ordered a bunch of the cubes and I will let you know |

Yes - they always come slightly moist. I actually like that about them. I've been using them for years, and have never had an issue with algae or mold. Yes, that's normal for the Park Seed sponges to come moist. If you don't like that for long-term storage, it's no big deal to lay them out on trays for a few days to dry them out, which is what I've done in the past. I've got a ton from 15 years ago, all perfectly dry and fine, sitting in ZipLoc bags. I just soak them a bit before I plant. I've always liked the Park Seed sponges. |

badmwnrizn --if you try them, report back and let us know what you think. Yes they do get top covered in algae however I cut a small square if tin foil slightly larger than the cube put a hole in the center and slit one side to slide over plant stalk and this stopped the algae growth. |
